Was in lanzarote last week. Down in the harbour there was an enormous sting ray swimming about in only about ten foot of water. It was the strangest thing seeing it swimming. Was talking to a dublin lad who told me the sting ray was a resident all year round in the harbour and he reckoned it was close to 200 lb. Thousands of mullet in around the harbour devouring all the food that was being thrown at them. Crazy place!!

Hi Dave,
Was there myself two weeks ago and saw him, the size of a dining table it is, unbelieveable in such shallow clear water. He nearly gave me a heart attack though, I was handing out a lovely little 2lb mullet at the steps in the harbour when the "big fella" swam about 6 inches underneath my hand. Let out a very high pitched girly scream much to the amusement of he young spanish kids watching
The mullet in the harbour give great sport on light tackle although you have to wade through the small (.5 - 1lb) fish but you'll eventually get the bigger ones, I had a few to just over 3lb.
I wonder can anyone enlighten me as to which species they are, they all were the usual silver color but with a golden spot on their gill cover.

hi Alby Those sound like golden grey mullet, which turn up in south Wales and southern England and are a tad easier to catch than the normal grey mullet.

I was in fuerteventura early this year I fly fished for the mullet in the harbour using a 7 weight fl rod and a piece of wool as a fly. I had incredible sport with fish to 5lbs. The locals tought I was mad as on such light tackle I had to run after the fish in the surf each time I hooked one
