Dunner,
Im targeting tope this year from the shore and any research ive done on them so far nothing has sprung up about cork, Im based in cork myself and Ill be heading kerry direction I think...

I would imagine though that some have been hooked by anglers by accident while targeting other species but due to bite offs maybe they never knew what it was..

I willl never forget fishing a rock mark in west cork a couple of years ago for spurs and my rod bent from tip to butt and this is not an exaggeration, it bent so much that the butt was wedged against the rocks, it held like this for a few seconds before the snood gave away.. I always have my suspicions that it was a tope or maybe someone can shed more light on this.. I will return to this mark in June to put out proper baits.. fishing over very clean sand with a bit of dept to it..

I've only ever heard of one smoothy caught in cork down west but i've never heard any tales of tope from reliable sources. Apparently they used to be a regular catch off the shore in cobh  , as i was told by an elderly chap on the quays down that way one evening. But needless to say i wasn't rushing back down the next night with my wire traces. As the lad above said, kerry seems to be the way to go.
