Fixed spool/multipliers

Hi fellas, thinking of upgrading from fixed to multi, wondering if theyre as headwrecking to master as some people make out??generally i use shimano baitrunners and have no problem whatsoever wit them(i hear some of you saying if its not broke dont fix it)however conditions sometimes favour distance, are they really the be all and end all of angling?thanks

Nope there are lads that can put a bait to the horizon with a fixed spool. You should maybe look at getting some casting lessons.

i can cast about the same distance with both so will getting a multi make you cast futher no but as keith said learn to cast properly then if you decide a multi is better then get one ,they both have pro,s and cons but to be honest for pleasure fishing a fixed spool will do it all with less problems if its windy, the reason most lads use multies is cos they look cool and make a lovely sound when you hit a big cast

Sorry, nothin wrong wit my casting,u misunderestood my post.i can get 180yds+no probs, some marks require greater distance is all, wondering about the main benefits and is it worth mastering the multi's,some say yes and some say no dont bother, theyre disaster, appreciate ur eye opening opinion thou!

I like yourself had the same question but instead of looking for someone else to tell me what there like i bought a descent secondhand abu and found out for myself. If its distance your after ask AG or Paddyc on this site. But if your casting 180yards with bait your doing better than 90% of irish anglers

there aint many people who can hit 180 with bait, so stick to what you got, you wont see any dramatic improvment with a multiplier, maybe get one of the big pitted fixed spools

If you can hit 180yards and cannot improve it,s your gear or technique. Try using lighter line and see if that gets you further, I'd hate to be reeling in 180yards of line with a fish on though

If the lighter line dosnt help get some lessons and you,ll be sorted.

I was the same a few months back so I decided to buy 2 reels here on the site 1 level wind for starting off and then 1 without the level wind for when I got the hang of things. I really like them , smaller and neater than the fixed spool I used and I can cast further . Mind you I have had a few quite a few birds nests on the non level wind :x but like anything I'm sure I'll get it with time..... When I said cast further I'd be lucky to cast half what your casting so I'm not sure if it will help.

i can get 180yds+no probs

Many lads can only just hit 100-120 yards with a multi (lead, bait and rig), if your genuinely hitting 180+ yards fishing with a fixed spool setup I'd suggest you stick with what your good at

Why change :?:

"180 yards with bait".....    . multi or fixed spool, both have plus points, learn how to use both ,it pays to have as much knowledge as possible in this game.for fixed spool advice, ask Paul Mason here,if you want to " look cool and want your reel to make a funny noise " (?), try the lads in the casting section......here's a fact to end with.....Denis Brock set a new Irish casting record last sun.using a mutiplier reel..bar Paul mason ,and josie McLouglin from Antrim, I'm unaware of many fixed spool users who could come close.but if you can hit 180,! heres the point..both work ,both have their fans, :)

sorry tex but someone has to say it..

if you think you're hitting 180+ with bait you are only fooling yourself!

if you are then get up to slaughter hill and set a new record!

180 m is a good cast. The only way I could reach anything like that is on a flat beach but I would have to wade out 100m first
