Have a good trawl through the reports section for instances where Bass are reported caught. There's a wealth of info in there in the totality of the reports - you just have to datamine and filter it. You'll soon get the right impressions about hooks, rigs, baits once you've waded through a couple of hundred Bass reports.

Next have a good long hard read of this site.

Then pick up the phone and make a booking with him. You'll learn more in a day or two out with him than you would in several years learning by yourself.

You'll need a bit of surf to get bass on the feed. Target beaches where there is rough ground. Try to stick close to this type of ground if the beach has it. If the beach doesn't have reefs or rocky areas a rough sea is generally needed. A big cast isn't essential in most cases to catch, just as far as the third breaker. Conditions vary from beach to beach, but once you work out the conditions to target them, eg: tide, time of day, weather, you should be sorted. A bit of time will be needed on each beach to work out when they feed etc. Generally, I have found a low incoming tide perfect, with a rough sea and overcast weather. In terms of bait you can't go wrong with your simple lug. However many people have had success on peeler crab, full squids, razorfish and large mackerel bait. They also feed on sandeels so they should be a good bet. Unless you're going to head South it's probably a bit early to try for bass. However they are localized at this time of year in certain parts, so if you can find one of these areas you should do fine. I'd suggest using a pulley pennel rig with 3/0 hooks. (Between 2/0 and 5/0 should catch)

keep casting distance max 50meters.I know ther are expensive but best bait is crap, if you can collect them your self you'll save some yoyoyyoss.
also life sandeal are big shot for bass to ,no need long casting at all ,max 30 metres will do do job.
pennel rig has to be i belive it gives better bait prezintation(probably wrong spelling :D )
before the night and before the sun comes out will gives you bigger smile, i could give you guaranty for that.
I do not wanna say this but i agree some other coment regarding bass catching.
Bass has to be there and for that you will need big big big local knowladge.
other than that bass has no different than others keep belive the poseidon ,he makes you happy soon or later :D :D :D
