Has anyone fished the bank of the Foyle just above the power station? Our farm is inside the wall at the Black Braes and I would be interested in putting out a line some time if I thought there would be any point. It is just down the Donnybrewer Road..
It looks to be quite shallow water and a dirty mucky bottom. I guess that shouts flounder but would there be much chance of anything else? I am sure sea trout would be in the vicinity given that the Faughan exits to the left of our ground, but not sure if a River Foyle permit is needed or whether that falls into the Lough Foyle territory?
Any advice appreciated

flounder, eels and mullet are the main speices but other fish can be caught as for the sea trout you need a permit to fish for them even in the sea

Would actually love to give the mullet a go!! Some fight off them, caught a 4lb fish last summer abroad and the fight was brilliant, really put a bend in the rod.
Any advice on what the usual tactics are down round that area - I know mullet generally need to be educated for a while before they will take a hook bait as they are scavengers and usually eat mud and weed etc...

3 hook flappers, rolling lead or else the crabs will clean your hooks in minutes, usual baits, as for the mullet i havent had any success with them, but do a search on the site there is some good threads wrote on them and good luck

Hi Scrob, an interesting location , give it a go as you never know what might show up. I,m in the Middle East ( work) and have tried for mullet down at the Station Road , turn right past the trout fishery and follow the wall till the very end ..Plenty of Mullet but came up blank mind you. Never put enough time in re ground baiting etc . However will try again when the mullet are back in numbers but will try the fly this time. Your farm can,t be very far from my sisters farm at Lower Donnybrewer Road.. Farm is run by Brendan and Hilary ?? Ok ttul

Yes my dad would know Hilary well, he will know who it is if you mention the black braes, we are just over the railway line.
I must go down some time and do some ground baiting for the Craic to see if I can turn up any mullet, from what I have read online mullet normally eat mud and weed but they are proper scavengers so they can be educated to start feeding on most things but it takes a lot of days ground baiting to get them comfortable eating something new. I have caught a fair few in around harbours in France and Spain and they take bread no problem as they are used to people chucking stuff in the water all the time. Unreal fighting fish too!!
