New to Forum-Newbie Angler

Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:10 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the Forum and relatively new to sea angling. Just bought some shore fishing gear for my 8 yr old son and myself to use. I used to do a bit of shore fishing in my youth (nothing serious, just a bit of wrasse and mackeral fishing during summer months) and would like to get into it a bit more as a way to get out and about with my son.

Any tips, locations etc. would be welcome.

Thanks to all for the very helpful posts and PMs. Looking forward to getting out with the young lad to do a bit of shore fishing. We're from just under Lough Neagh (geographically of course not depth-wise) but I'm up for some travel (well no choice really given we live live in a land-locked county).

I'll get a bit of casting practice with the new beachcasters and fixed spools on Lough Neagh before venturing out to salt water.

All the best,

welcome fish on a bicycle, ive 8 year old twin boys and take them fishn when i can i found the best value was to but a half decent spining rod and reel combo.i took the hooks of a light lure and let them at it for a while, didnt take long to get a basic cast out, they have even caught a few flatties and their first schoolie bass last year all though had to pass the rod to me to help reel in :) seemed better value than buying a cheap rod from aldi/lidl and the reel breaking the first or second time out, i prefer beaches than piers for safety, young boys will be boys and places like arklow always seem to throw up fish even during the day
good luck with it 8)
