Salting black lug

Thu Jan 27, 2011 4:06 pm

I'm going digging black lug on the next set of low low tides. I was told that black lug are good salted and keep for a long time if prepared in this way. Does anyone know what's the best way to do this. Do you gut the lug before salting. Do you leave them in the salt for a while (if so how long) and then wrap them in newspaper and store or do you leave them in the salt till you're going to use them. I also intend to freeze a batch to leave in the freezer so i'll always have some little bit of bait for the spur of the moment sessions so tips on freezing them will be appreciated too.

Thanks,
Evan

just gave it a try there will post up how it goes, they seem very firm when you put them in the salt alright!

That salting technique seems a lot better than using frozen gutted lug (I have always found the frozen lug to be completely useless - not surprising since all it consists of is skin, all the juicy guts are gone).

Cheers lads,
Great tips there and i'll be looking forward to trying it out. I hear it's alot better that freezing them alright. I've a few fresh blacks that i'll use as they are but next batch will go for the salt. I've a good spot for them too if anyone i know is interested drop me a pm.

Thanks,
Evan

Good to hear it worked kaylem. I'll try to get out for a dig myself in the next few weeks and salt the lot. Seems like a much better idea than freezing alright, and saves space in the freezer. Keep us up to date on the results your having with them anyway.

Tight lines,
Evan

Try your local cash and carry, they should stock large bags for supplying restaurants and the like. I got a 25kg bag the year before last from a friend who worked in a bakery if you have any connections
