Beach rod advice - fixed spool

Mon Jan 03, 2011 12:36 pm

Hi guys

At the moment I have just got a 11'6 Bass rod for my shore fishing which is serving me well. but I think it may be time to get a beach caster as well for a bit of extra distance and the ability to chuck a heavier load. I have had one beach caster in the past, a horrible big cheapy Shakespeare from years ago which was heavy bulky and had zero bite detection..

Can any of you recommend me something under £100 which would do for general all round beach work? I was thinking length-wise around 13', what do you recommend? I have a spare Penn Surfmaster 70 reel to pair with it and would like to stick to fixed spool if possible.

Cheers..

you wont go wrong with a salt rod, very good quality for their price. and at this time of the year with the sales on you will get one very cheap, i heard that the salt 15' is now down to £55, one of my rods is the salt 13' mx and i cant fault it.

Yeah I have been looking at both the Salt and the Powerstix. My bass rod is a Penn Powerstix Bass and I am very happy with it so would be tempted for a matching surf rod.

They do a 13' and a 15'9 version. I have read the longer rod helps keep your line out of the surf but obviously it is more cumbersome than the shorter 13 footer. What would you guys recommend, in your experience, for a good all rounder?

Ps Don, one of my main objectives for this rod is to target the thornies down at Fahan to get a longer line chucked right out into the channel whilst working the bass rod a bit closer in.

the 13' will do the job perfect for the thornies at fahan.

Id go for the powerstix, as i have the 11' 6" version, and will get the 13ft when i can afford it.Great rods.

the salt and the penn Powerstix are very good rods for their price range, its just that i personally prefer the salt as it is a two piece, but any of these two rods are very good quality for their price.

i would agree with fishermanum the salt rods are great rods for the money, the salt 13ft 6in fx,is a great rod, strong but still tippy enough to see smaller fish bite.
