fishing Hogs Head Co Kerry

Hallo,

I'm planning a trip to Sneem with a friend of mine and we want to do some boatfishing and shore(rock)fishing for pollack,wrasse,and whatever crosses our lines.We have been in the area before but never had the chance to fish Hogs Head. I saw and heard a lot of fishing there is done on the inside of the bay overlooking Ballinskelligs and Waterville. Is the south side That inaccessible? Can anyone familiar with the situation there ,give me some advice ? We want to fish near the very end of the head ! We are going to use black and red artificial worms,lug,frozen sandeel and crabs. Any marks for cathing a few ray's would be welcome ,we had them before at blackwater pier,and from the boat near Gleesk.

We plan ouir trip in the early days of May.We stay with a friend of mine at Sneem river Lodge.I have more than 22 weeks fishing Ireland on my name and I caught more then 45 species of fish.From Sneem I once caught a record garfish of 1840 grams and a lenght of 98 cm.
Our skipper said It wouldnt be a record,because there were more people catching fish like this.That was not very clever,because I later discovered this fish to be a world record.I had four people as a whitness.Mind You I 'm talking about the early eighties!!I also caught a monkfish in Westport,tope in Galway bay,blue shark from Courtmacsherry and lots more.So we are very curious about a mark as the outside (not often visited) part of Hogs head.But of course safety first.If there is a good alternative,please tell me.Fishing Ballinskellig a few years back I could not discover a decent place tot fish from at the Bolus head there except on the road to St Finians Bay.I would be very pleased to get some inside information,because coming all the way from Holland is very difficult to talk to the right people,as you can understand.That's why a forum like this one is so great. Every true fisherman tries to help one another,and I say this .I do not always tell everybody whats what or where every time,but sometimes I share a good spot because I know it can do no harm.
By the way,I think,we as visitors are obliged to help conserve any species of fish.So we put back every fish we catch.

thats good to hear, i hope ye have a good time. dont know the area tho so unfortunatly cant help you.

just one bit of advise tho. you didnt mention Bass but kerry is a very good place to be if you fancy trying for them. the Bass fishery is closed in Ireland from the 15th of May to the 15th of June inclusive so if i were you id try to make sure that your holiday didnt clash and that it finishes before the 15th of may. otherwise book it for the end of june, the fishing in general might be a bit better by then anyway.
have a look for bob moss' books. they have a wealth of information for around the dingle peninsula, its about a 2 hour drive from sneem but could be well worth takin a spin out there for a day.

Of course we have planned our trip juast before the end of the Bass season.And though bass fishing is one of the things we do,we do catch bass in Holland too so we try always to get species we don't have.That's why we want to know a bit more.Good ip,Dingle.We keep that in the back of our heads.We fished Fenit before,but the result was due to hasty preparations,not good.We had an organised trip along a great deal of the Irish westcoast in two weeks,organised by the irish touristboard,so you go a lot af places in a short time,including Fenit ,Cliffs of Moher from Quilty,Westport,Clifden and Downings,where we fished an international competition and fished the grounds east of Tory island.A great experience by the way.
I'll try to get hold of some of the mentioned books,and try and learn a few things,there is always room for more..

Piscator,
in early May you should have good bass fishing off any of the beaches down there. Also they should be coming to lures as well.

It's a little bit early for good rock fishing. Pollock and wrasse will be around but they tend to be of a smaller size.

The outside of Hogs head is difficult to get to. I think the end of it is an Island so may be inaccessible. Never bothered with it myself as there are much easier marks around. There is a fishing shop in Waterville run by Kevin Brain who also provides a guiding service, he should be able to sort you out.
I'll pm you some marks for Bolous head.

Please note that all these rock marks are extremely dangerous and especially so in rough weather.

Ballinskelligs is a very good mark for huge pollak from shore

personal record 11 lb but you have to walk from fields it coulb be dangerous by rain(never alone) there are many marks in ballinskelligs

its depend the day the tide the wind you have to change marks even the pollack can bite any time
my favourite lure is xlayer ayu or personal made xlayer in three colour no lure can be better like this one it is magic
live sandeel is good too and all the orange lures

others marks hogs head, lambs head, kings head


for bass all the beaches from waterville to cahershiveen and kells are good specialy a t night

yes there are more that one marks in ballinskelligs not easy to explain and nice to discover them

you must past the quay for the skelligs

walking threw fields to the top of "mountain" you have a mark in front of the canal for the skelligs

and the others marks are at the opposite the access is a bit dangerous ( you must a have a rope in your bag) specialy dangerous by rain and no going fishing alone)
the marks are open from sea

you have pollaks (a very versatile fishing) makerel and only one bass from these mark too deep for bass
