Hi Lads. What's the heaviest breaking strain of monofilament that can be securely knotted? Had a quick look on the web and opinion seems to vary a bit. Really want to know at which point it would be better to use a crimp? Cheers.

Ive used up to 300lb with a knot my mate Drummer showed me, not sure what its called. I dont know if its in my head but i much prefer knots to crimps.

I tie 300lbs mono with a Palomar knot is easy enough to tie have a look at the link attached
This is a good knot for thick mono, I do use it down to 50lbs as well, done a wee vid here, no commentary though I find it best to pull up the knot as tight as you can then slide it down to the eye.
That knot in the video above is the business (sean p's video). I use it for mono up to 200lb. Only thing is you need a good size eye on the hook or swivel to be able to secure the knot properly. I've lifted 20 lbs with that knot on 200lb line and no slipping.

Do ya not find the line too thick with the Palomar to pass through the eye of the hook when it's doubled over? I know I did

I am using it on big hooks 10 12 and 14/0 and don't have any problems with it, I am also using big heavy weight swivels as well it works fine for me mate.

I've never had to use hooks that big..unfortunatey. I was using 7/0 and 8/0's and found it impossible.
