John go for the penn surfmaster 70. it's a good reel for distance too!! reasonable price too. haven't heard anything on the 'beastmaster' rod. i must have a look? have a look at some of the penn combo deals- 3 pieces. you may have an option of surfmaster or mag real on these. look for a good fishing tip on the rods you choose. do not buy a rod with a tip diameter of over 4mm. 3.5 - 2mm are good for showing bites from small fish and it means you will enjoy your fishing more. tips with which bend nicely in the tide without folding over are preferable. too stiff a tip and the rod will be overwhelming when fishing at close range for flounder and the like, it will bump fish off. penn rods are usually reliable and well priced.

m.b.3 is spot on regarding the penn surfmaster 070. I bought one about 2 years ago. it is smooth to use, well built, has good line capacity and comes with a spare spool. I would have bought a second one only i came across a tackle shop while on holidays in spain and bought a Tuareg Z 5000 for 95 euro.

there are plenty of combo deals which includes both reels both here and in the UK which seem to be good value.

penn surfmaster is a good reel, aint seen the shimano rod,

have you looked at any of the grauvell 3 piece?some of them are fairly reasonably priced.
on reels the shimano aerlex 8000 gt will stand the test of time also, had one for over 8 years, treat it like s##t and its still goin strong! would advise against the cheaper xs version tho, the gt is a superior reel for a few extra quid.

i think the seamaster 70 is definitly the one i'll get, and i'll have another look at the penn combos(cheers mark and mike).

there was a penn combo that came with the seamaster 70 and a surfblaster seatrek 3pc+1. that one also sounds good but i'll have to see if there still stocking them.

i also had a look at some of the grauvell rods, but the one i was interested in ( grauvell trekton 3pc) was discontinued. i guess it was discontinued for a good reason. are there any other good priced grauvell rods.

there are some fair priced ones on veals website. also look at the 'Taurag'. reasonable price with a shallower spool than most- makes sense. why would you need 450yards and the like of line on a shore reel??

The Daiwa Emblem reel would be the perfect match for that rod.
