hey lads and ladies was out 2nite for a quick cast wit a mate for 2hrs.the fishing was very quiet and with all the rain and lightning we called it a nite.the beach was flat calm..near the end of the session my rod took a good knock and i stuck to wat i thought i had a fish but it felt like i had a conger that went into its hole.this venue has thrown up many dogs, bullhusses, coalies, flounders to us before but i coundnt move this thing that i had on the end of me rod.my rod was in a massive u shape but i cudnt get the fish to move.we were fishing into the clew bay area of mayo which is renounded for its ray.could this of being 1 but i thought that the ray would of moved off by now from the beaches.the venue was sandy with no snagges.any suggestions

hi Brian same thing happened to me at the pier you fished with me,I was on sandy ground and it felt like a conger that got in a hole, after 20 mins keeping pressure on it and giving it slack line I got it to move but there was no stopping it when it moved, when it swam away it felt just like a ray only a lot bigger then any ray I caught before
I think it wont be long before you see a report of a skate from the Mayo or Galway shore, mikado and a similar experience as well

Well, you said it was a sandy venue with no snags............hardly likely to be conger type ground but it could have been snooping around for food. If that is the case, surely the fish wouldnt have a "bolt hole" to lock into.
As suggested, may have been a skate or an extremely large ray.
Time to tackle up for the big boys and get back out there

Get the Dubby Bags down, Nice Stiff Rods/tough reels and some Big Fish Baits...
They do it in Scotland, why not over here?
