Hello Folks,
Havent been sea angling in a few years but want to get back at it.
I am working in cork at the moment and am staying in ballycotton untill friday.
Has anyone any idea how its fishing and what baits and tactics I could use.
Or if there are any other signigifant marks in the area that I can try?
Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie,
We used to fish the pier here alot during the winter. It was a great place for dabs and flats in general. The best of the fish were out at distance, just smack it striaght over the wall just to the left of the right hand corner if those directions make sense!
Further down along the pier there is some great fishing on the seaward side next to the green oil drums. Really foul ground close in but plenty of conger in the 20 - 25lb bracket. Seen guys just casting out onto the sand here at night and still getting fish so there may not be any great need to lose lots of gear. We always found the bigger fish striaght down the wall though.
The rocks in the tide race directly left of the pier produce bass and further along you will get wrasse and pollack but they aren't great marks for these fish.
Guileen would be a good place to try your hand at plugging for a few bass. The rocks down to the left of the car park between the island does produce, we've even managed specimen wrasse from here on lures even though it isn't very deep. If you head to your right over the headland from the car park and move along the cliff for a couple of hundred yards there is some excellent plugging ground for bass but this place has become alot more popular in recent years.
You could try your hand at the beaches like Garryvoe and Ballinwilling (near the stream) but certainly Ballinwilling only really produces at night. The stream often has a few thronbacks knocking around during the summer months - at night if there's no surf.

Thanks Liam,
Think I'll hit the pier tonight so.
The hotel said the only place to buy bait and tackle is in middleton.
Is this true? I didnt bring a fork.
Might try spinning off the rocks somewhere tomorrow evening. Have the fly rod with me too. Thanks again for the help

Eddie,
Have been away from Cork for a few years now but I imagine Middleton would be the closest alright.
We used to dig plenty of lug at the eastern end of Ballinwilling, around the rocky island on the beach but even then it was getting a hammering and may be dug out now. There should be plenty of mackerel around the exposed end of the pier in Ballycotton by now. They come right in next to the wall here at night under the lights and can be taken on float tackle while you're fishing a second rod.

Eddie, if you don't mind fishing late or very early try Ballinwilling or Ballycreane both are fishing well at the moment in darkness for codling smalleyed ray dogs and eels. Only lug and either squid or razorfish needed. Get on the Youghal road, turn right at Castle martyr along threw Ladys bridge take the next left after two miles you will see signposted Ballinwilling. The next beach is a mile further on. Good fishing at the moment, I kid you not.
