Can anyone tell me if they have ever targeted bass off Mizen Head and if so where exactly.

I am heading to Barley Cove this weekend and would like to try spinning/plugging for a few bass. Can anyone recommend any marks down here for this? I've heard vague reports some time ago that there are some great plugging marks near Mizen Head?

Liamo i visited Barley Cove recently and whilst swimming there saw shoals of what looked like schoolies on the ebbing tide - sure there would be larger Bass about there too. Lovely spot to visit - just a shame i didn't have any gear with me.

I have to say lads that it's nice to hear of people finally taking an interest in this neck of the woods, it seems that there are so few people fishing around here that about 3 of us have to do all our own leg work! Ask about fishing around here and all you get is Mackerel or Pollock. However, seeing as you've asked I'll try to help you all out. Plugging isn't really my thing but i reckon that if you want to do a bit of rock hopping around three castle head, which is spitting distance from Mizen head, you'd have a good chance but be careful it's quite an unforgiving place!
Barley Cove sees good shoals of schoolies on an ebbing tide, especially around the rivermouth, also there are plenty of mullet and sea trout in the right conditions. Personally I'd fish either the beach opposite the campsite or the smaller Chimney Cove, I've had good fish from both these beaches, Chimney cove on a flooding tide where HW occurs just after sunset and at Boulder Beach (opp campsite) on the last hour of the ebb up until about half tide. Lugworm is the best bait and that's where your troubles can start. These beaches are really popular with tourists in the summer and whilst fishing you'll get constantly hassled, not oo mention when you're digging! Ballyrisode beach is best for lug but if you want frozen bait you've had it unless you want to travel all the way to Clonakilty! Going back to plugging, try off the rocks between the two named beaches, I keep meaning to try here but get sidetracked. Hope this helps.
