I was walking down the beach the other day and i came across alot of 'Big' fish in the water , and you could clearly see there fins sticking out of the water, there was atleast 20+ or more so i threw a stone into the middle of them and the whole area were they were lit up with splashes (they all went nuts) but they still stayed around for awaile, Does anyone have any idea what fish these were?

Can you describe the size/shape of the fins, how they moved etc?

I have seen shoals (half a dozen or so at a time) of trigger fish on really calm evenings swimming just under the surface with just the triangular dorsal fin above water. They seem to flap this slowly from one side to the other as they swim along, usually in a wandering, aimless, slow walking pace sort of a way. Was amazed when I saw these first - was in a rowing boat and to see what looked initially like a butterfly stuck on the water surface turn out to have a triggerfish below it - we'll, you see it all at sea, as they say. The presence of the boat didn't bother them in the least.

I have also seen mullet shoaling, shooting about in the water, the dorsals leaving a clear v shaped wake in the water. Would have expected them to have legged it if startled though.

Sorry didn't to seem short. I've never seen the triggers shoaling so you could well be right but I still reckon they were mullet. Dwon in Courtmac its a fairly regular occurence. Its not the usual mullet movements, they just seem to congregate in the shallows and mooch around. Not half as spookable as they usually are either in this situation.

It looked more like how you would see trout rising on a river only much bigger water movement plus i saw 1 big fin and it looked like 1 small one behind it, plus they were moving agressive and in a zig zag movment on top of the water like they were feeding on something , but there was no sprat in the water, i was told it was bass but ive never seen that many in one spot , all i know is whatever they were they were 'BIG'.

I'd agree with blaker. Most definately mullet. They often swim with their fins up out of the water shark style.

You might be right with the mullet at that. Triggers are way to slow and you don't see the tail breaking the water. I thought mullet would have been gone like a shot when your shadow hit the water, much less a rock. Maybe they only do that when you have a rod in your hand
