Reflector Tape

Tue Sep 28, 2010 6:50 pm

Just wondering what the opinions are of different brands brands of reflector tape for rod tips. Also the most effective methods of putting it on i.e. rings/diagonal etc.

The reason I ask is I'm half blind at the best of times. I've used Sakuma alot but find the gauge very heavy. I twist it on but often wonder would effect the rod tip if on to tight.

I've got Sakuma on one rod and Breakaway on the other and there's little between them. They are from different factories, although you'll probably find the vast majority are identical. I can spot mine from about 200m away with a headtorch.

I know what you mean about the gauge of the Sakuma but it seems to be work fine for me. I cut it into a strip and wound it on diagonally like you have, you'll not get sufficient tension on it to do any damage to the tip in my view, certainly mine are all OK.

i got rolls of 3m reflector tape from halfords a while back(as recommended by someone here) mighty stuff. white, yellow or red. think it was about €5 a roll but enough to do a good few rods on each.
i just cut it in little strips just long enough to overlap and put them on under each other.

i took this pic from about 10 foot and the light is just from the flash of a nokia phone.

I used to use the same stuff but I found that it was very thick and it stiffened up the bite detection because the rod couldn’t bend or else that it came in a tiny sheet and you were cutting it into strips and joining them every 4 inches.
One of the lads on the site recommended this guy to me a few years ago and I think the tape is great. It’s not the cheapest by any means but it is very thin, pre-cut into 30cm x 5cm strips and if I remember correctly there are 3 strips per sheet, roughly 3 feet.
They have an unusual tape that in daylight looks black (charcoal) but is reflective.
I am using an AA Surf rod and I have it taped with this. By day you can’t even see the tape but hit it with a light in the dark and it lights up like a Christmas tree.

Love the stuff.
Best of luck whatever you get,

Go to your local auto factors and get a sheet of number plate backing.

Cut to your requirements and apply to rod.

You will see your rod tip from a long way off :D

Have a look at this stuff. It is supplied by a company called Mighty Bright who can be contacted at http://www.dragon-signs.com/
It is designed for fishing rods and comes in 5mm strips. It is very easy to apply and comes in a range of colours to appeal to all tackle tarts. Although it is self-adhesive i found it was best to put a small drop of superglue on the end of the winding.

i always use the gemini tape it works great i usually cut it into thin strips and wind it spirrally around the tip. think its around 4euro which is expensive for the small strip you get

Cheers for the replies lads. I managed to get the Mighty Bright tape in a tackle shop. €4.70 for 4 thin strips about 6 inches long. However it did the rod tip grand and it's a much thinner gauge then the Sakuma. As for the results on brightness I'll have to wait a night or two.

I meant to say that I tried Halfords up in Coolock and they had none. Now in saying that after I looked and asked for assistance, the help wasn't very forthcoming. Did you ever see the ads on Dave for Halford's. Not my experience at all.

i have had problems with the mighty bright tape first of all the adhesive on it was very poor and peeled of after afew days .i contacted the guy and fair play to him he sent replacement no problem.i went to put it on and again had the same problem with it,so contacted him again and he said to heat it before i put it on and apparently there is a short clip on u tube showing how he does it.so i gave it a miss to much trouble.its supposed to be for rod tips and in my opinion it should stick to the blank with out using a spot of super glue.in the end u i used solas tape and have had no problems at all.

I have six rods with it on and no problems at all. The super glue I put on the very last turn just to secure it so it never started to lift. The stuff I got came in a tweve inch strip.

used black mightybrite to finish a re build job done by Shane ,which needless to say was top notch, pre clean the rod with meths or similar, this helps adhesion, gemini tape is ok,best of all is new reflective tape for the sides of H.G.Vs.,available in silver or red, trade name is reflextite, nice and supple and very thin ,dont use the one made by 3M ,its too stiff to wind around a rod tip.downside is that it comes in 200 metre rolls ,so talk nicely to any H.G.V mechanic or, coach body builder, think I have if anybody a strip or two in the shed if any body wants to try it
