Collecting Bait

Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:30 am

Morning All,

I have spent a small fortune on bait over the last 2 weeks. Does anybody know where i can get the likes of Peeler & Squid at fair prices? Or where to actually collect peelers? I also need to start doing my own digging for lug - only been fishing a year so I have spent the last year buying bait & focusing on honing my fishing rather than collecting bait myself. What i really want to know are there any beaches that provide an angler with a variety of baits ie: worms, crab, razor. Where to go? Best times to go?

Thanks

Or does anybody sell frozen bait in bulk?

Conor.

lug is probably the easiest to find.. look on beaches at low tide for there marks.

regards to peeler crab... i dont use that much to be honest because they arent that hot were i fish. one of the best baits is fresh caught mackerel. Squid and sandeel can be bought in local tackle shops.

Hey Conor, Only bait i buy is frozen sand eel and razor, buy my razor and squid in Howth in bulk for reasonable rates ,The rest i collect myself,You need to be flexible when it comes to low tide as this is usually prime time for collecting. As round our way said Lug is perhaps the easiest to collect,Takes a bit of practice but worth the hassle,And the same applies to rag .where the best rag is nearly always found at the lowest point at LW and if theres ragworm you can find mussels and cockles .Peeler is an expensive bait to buy ,which is why ive only ever bought it once  Anywhere there is rockpools ,seaweed beds and estuaries ,under rocks etc etc can be good places to find crabs.Limpets can also be handy for wrasse hope this helps  and saves ya a few quid.
