Daiwa SL30SH, problem

Hi All,

I bought myself a slosh a couple of weeks ago and im having a nightmare, has any one expierienced a problem with the magnet on them and if so is there any way to fix it. i can't get the spool to tighten at all, if i take my finger off the line in free spool it drops staright to the ground because there is no tension being provided by the mag, all this with just a 3oz attached. I tried a cast with it but its far too fast and im spooling up. At first i thought it was me but i met chap on the beach who told me it was a problem with the mag.

any advice is greatly appreciated.

sounds like there is no brake blocks in it, did you buy it new or second hand ???

if you got it new you have to fit the breaks yourself there will be 2 set in a little plastic bag in the box fit the bigger ones till you get used to it , my lad started using one as his first multi when he was about 11 years old and i have never seen him get a birdy with it and it,s a big reel

Chap on the beach was talking nonsense, there are no mags in a slosh 30. Stick the brake blocks in, keep the line level 3-4 mm below the edge of the spool and dont use too light a line. For someone starting off on multipliers, the Slosh 30 is a bit of a demon to control owing to its size and will cause you a few problems till you get the hang of it. Personally, unless you are fishing deep rough ground marks, there is absolutely no need for one of these on Irish shores. I made the same mistake and bought one as my first multiplier some years ago, it wasnt a happy experience I can tell you! There should be a knob on the side of the spool, tighten that until the spool is revolving at a speed you can cope with. BTW, casting a 3oz weight off the thing isnt going to help you either....

as sac man says there is no mags on it unless it has been added. i have a few sl30sh and i always use them for rough ground and never have had the problem you are having. think either the little blocks are missing or something has been removed to do this. best bet is to get someone to have a look at it or it you want to swop it give me a shout, i love them.

I think Petekd has nailed the problem here when he mentioned the weight of the lead. Bird's nests are caused on multipliers when the momentum of the spool gives off more line than the weight carries out. This problem is particularly bad when using small weights, as the force of the weight gets the spool moving, but the light weight is quickly slowed by air resistance, meaning that line is being delivered but not taken up. Increase to 4 or 5oz and you should be ok; that, or really screw down the brakes.

You might want to sell that 30 and pick yourself up a reel with Magnetic braking. Penn Mag525 or Okuma Magnatex would be a great start. The Penn would be the better Reel and will hold a little more line, but is nearly double the price. Both will handle rougher ground and heavier lines if you need them to. If you are fishing very heavy ground and 25lb plus line go for the Magnatex 30 nice big reel with magnetic braking.

if you do and your reel is in good condition, i have a okuma 20 mag used twice if you fancy swop and if yours isnt to good i ave the same reel with level wind. i love the sloshes.
