oysters as bait

right lads this is a mad one.we have all heard of good shellfish baits such as mussels,razors,cockles and clams etc as bait.right has any 1 be mad enough to try oysters as bait.i wana know and wat they r good for.they sure are a good size bait with lots of juices so i pressume there centy.im half thinkin of tryin them.who knows.any 1 on here with any more info.

never tried them myself, but i do remember an article in irish angler with pete mcGroary landing a nice flounder off an unnamed north wesernt mark on oyster. he whipped it on like normal shellfish bait. cant see why they wouldnt work but a little expensive no?

yes eric expensive wudnt be the word but if u knew they wud prouduce fish maybe to buy 2-3 of them every once in a while.there is a good sized fish in that shell so maybe u cud cut them into sections and get gud use out of 2.if i get me hands on 2 im gonna try them.the main thing is knowing how to open them

loads of small ones at the back of the pier in murrisk,tried them twice but with no luck

Read the same article, Eric, why not, a smart move might be to get in with your fishmonger and take the ones off him he doesnt sell, They have them in superquinn every day, they might sell a handful a week.

i get a lot of them were i dig my lug, and they do work, have had pollock coalies on them, and the flounder love them, just use plenty of elastic to bind them on.

Theres a special knife for this, an oyster knife or oyster shucker. Short strong stub of a blade, stick it in the hinge and prize the oyster open. Bring a bottle of tabasco and a lemon with you, any you don't use you can scoff!

ive had cod and whiting on them, but in fairness some lads have had whiting on kfc

seen lads use an old table knife for the job, if all else fails get a rock

if you can find an oyster farm locally they normally have a load of odds for the bin ....mishaped , damaged shells etc tried last year and was like trying to cast a snot so gave em a quick dip in boiling water and it helped a bit then treated them the same as mussel froze them onto a bait needle ....caught some codling and coalies in youghal on them but theyd eat anything

oh i no wat u mean seanie but i do go against boiling any shellfish for bait.why boils its goodness away.i know it makes it easier to bait up but ur lowering ur catch rate.the best way is fresh on the hook and notin will beat that.even if it takes more time to bait up well so be it.

Ah no I don't mean boil the beejapers out of them just 20 seconds in boiling water and drain and cool just barely stiffens them up . Found them hard work to be honest would rather lug,crab anyday. I must have spent 2 hours prepping them and they still flew off the hook like a hot snot

dont use snot in summer too runny wait till autum for colder snot it sticks to anything
