Smoothy season??

Mon Jul 26, 2010 9:59 pm

Hi folks. How long does the run of smoothounds normally last? I've been out three times in the last week at smoothy marks and still haven't managed to catch one  Embarassing as some lads are cleaning up judging by the reports! I've used pennel pulley rigs with 3/0 hooks and have tried crab, small whole squid and rag but with not even a knock. I just need to know how long they'll be hanging around for so that I can focus my efforts :D

Howdy they start showing up as early as March and hang around until October (well that's the latest I've had them) they peak in July 3/0 pennel pulley's and long and low's are two preferred rigs half crab if big whole crab if small... a few king rag on a pennel works well as does a cocktail of both happy hunting ;)

Hey Robin,

The Greater Dublin area seems a bit thin on the ground with them just lately but I'd say the bigger tides coming will help, however Wexford seems alive with them at the minute, and some turning up on the Wicklow beaches but not with any great consistency.

Give me a bell if you want a bit more help, or maybe even get out for a session over the next week or so - if you can get a pass that is

Regards

Mark
