Spinning the surf for bass

Hi all, I was told that you can spin for bass in the surf off beaches. Im relatively new to sea fishing so could some of you tell me how best and what best to use. I have a german sprat if it is up to the job.

Hi jonnyj .I have a good 20 years under my belt fishing for bass and never had a bass spinning, not from the lack of trying. out all day last tuesday the bass running very close to me but no take .I take my hat off to everyone who has had bass on a lure ,i think time is the thing with lures sorry i have no info but keep going and tell me how you get on

I have had great result's spinning for bass from surf beach's and will post a picture of some lures that i
have had some results with 2moro,from 1 beach i caught 2 Bass both about 5-6lbs within 20 minutes of eachother.

As promised the photos of the lure's which i have had result's,
The top 2 are 60g spinners with a likeness to the maria chaser
and the bottom 1 is a shallow diving plug called a maria angel kiss.

thanks for putting the lures up K.C. I will let you know how I get on the next day im out. Ive been told that due to the windy conditions over the last few days big bass should be comming closer to shore.

yes jonnyj the more surf there is caused by the wind will give you more chance,
and trust me you will know when you get a take as your heart will pump harder than
it has done before.

going out in Brandon this weekend for bit of spinning - fingers crossed for a bit of surf!

A well know striped bass angler in the U.S has some great blog entries about this the best method is to fish parallel to the waves and try and cycle your lure/plug around in the wave....also from experience bass in the surf if schooling will more that likely be playing and enjoying themselves an not interested in any lure put in front of them...there are far better areas to fish for bass try and reefs on any beach you know there will be bass there

Spinning from the sand in my experience (and we do a lot of it down here) is best done when seas are relatively calm. Wade out, lash a silver kilty as far out as you possibly can and retrieve swiftly. Move up and down the beach as you go. Kiltys are perfect lures that combine just enough weight with a streamlined shape for a hefty cast. I usually use 8lb line with a 12lb fluorocarbon leader about 10-12 feet long, 80-100 yards if you catch it right is achievable. Jensen Tobies are a decent lure too. We often do this on the beaches in Cork when its too calm for successful bait fishing. 4 or 5 fish over a 300 yard stretch over an hour or so is not uncommon in the slightest. One particular beach had 3 in 3 casts and a dropped one on the 4th.... However, as I say, much more effective in calmer conditions.

hi, i never had much luck with lures in the surf, the few bass i've had have been when the water was pretty calm except for a small swell,
completly blanked this year even though most my fishing this summer was spinning for bass, only caught one last year but it was worth the effort

Had a few 3 lb ish bass using 40 gm stingers and also bass bullets off the beach into a moderate surf - nothing so far using a plug yet off the beach but I'll keep on trying. Evening and dusk seem to be the key times for sucess for me though.
