Crookhaven/Barleycove-West Cork

I will be in this area from Sunday 3rd July.I will be there for about a week.Anyone here know that area? Want information on where to fish and where to get bait as I wont have access to a fridge/freezer.

Loads of lug in crookhaven "flats", Razor fish, also available. Should be catching mackeral by then. Beautiful place enjoy.

Barley Cove is a great place to go fishing. As the summer holidays have started I would be wary of fishing during the day as this beach is very popular with families. The best bait is fresh lugworm tipped with a small bit of squid, there are a few flatties around and lots of school Bass gather up around the river mouth when the tide is flooding. If you want to target bigger Bass, try Chimney Cove, which is the next beach along and shelves quite quickly. I prefer fishing around these parts from late autumn through to late spring. There's plenty of mullet in the lake behind Barley Cove. The best time to fish is when HW is around 10.30pm, fish the tide up and stay till an hour after HW, then go to O'Sullivans in Crookhaven for a deserved pint.
Alternatively, try the beach opposite the campsite, I call it Boulder Beach. This is best over low water, especially as light fades. You can dig plenty of fresh worm at Ballyrisode but there is a lack of tackle suppliers around here as most people are only interested in catching Mackerel and Pollock. You will have to get your frozen bait from Clon Tackle in Clonakilty.

I only brought the spinning rod with me and fished a few days off the rocks in Crookhaven and Schull.Caught a good few pollock but no mackeral to be seen.Lost a load of gear as I let my dad have a go spinning-he used to river fish years ago but never at sea think in total about E30 of gear he left in the rocks!!
