What to look for in a new mark?

What do people look for in an unknown/new rock mark and in an unknown/new beach mark when fishing for bass?
What makes a mark look like it might produce both for lure and bottom fishing?
I know this is probably the holy grail and nothing beats a bit of ground work and local knowledge but just wondered if anyone knows of any articles, info or experience that might help.

Bass hide in gullies or behind rocks, i only lure fish on rocks marks for bass you do the same with botom fishing on the beach try casting into gullies and at the the side of banks so look for any of them.

Go at low tide and work out where you think bass would be sitting.

Absolutely agree with the above but if you are out rock hopping on a new mark or decide to try a new beach you havent been to before, is it just a case of gut instinct?
