Pumping Lugworm

Hi guys

I got a bait pump as a present last week so headed out for the first time on Wednesday to Sandy mount where i live after an hour of poor results i got talking to a local walking who told me i was wasting my time that the worms were just blow lug and i could only use the pump for black.

I was wondering could anyone shed some light on whether this is true and if so could anyone tell me if there are black lug on any local beaches which i could have a go at?

Black lug burrow straight down from its cast thats why the pump and be used, blow lug go down in a u shaped burrow, thats why you wernt getting many.
To distinguish between weather the lug are black or blow by looking at the sand is look at the cast, if there is no blowhole within 2 foot around the cast it is probably a black lug if there is a blowhole it would suggest its a blow lug.
To get the blow lug, i dig between the cast and the blowhole with a garden fork, the lug arnt usually deep down this time of year, most are between 1-2 foot or less. Hope this helps

i find the blowlug are closer to the shoreline and the black lug further out near the lowtide mark,
saying that, there are so many casts black lug pop up every one in five or so.
keep at it but give yerself half an hour with the fork and compare the results til ye get used to the pump and different casts. it will also make a difference where you are digging. if there are no other diggers or traces of diggers then you might need to try elsewhere! ((you never mentioned your location )) just noticed you did!! sandymount :(

you can pump blow lug buts its quite tricky, you need to put the pump over the blow hole then angle the pump towards the cast pehaps 30 degees but you can get good numbers if you persist
