Hi there,
Started fishing last year and caught a good few mackerel and Pollock by spinning with feathers. Was hoping to add to these species this year by catching dogfish, dabs or codling (mainly want to target edible fish).
I’ve been reading about certain spots in Sutton on this forum and elsewhere on the web. I was out walking last weekend around the cliffs starting at Red Rock. When you hear of Red Rock as a mark, is it at the Martello tower that you are supposed to fish from? There’s a sign on the gate that it’s private property and under cctv surveillance.
Is it possible to fish from the cliffs beside it? What is the seabed like here? I saw plenty of rocks around. Is it a snaggy mark? I’ve not fished from a spot as high as this before so I hope I don’t sound foolish but are there any issues with landing a fish from high up, especially anything big?
Any tips for red rock or anywhere else along this stretch would be greatly appreciated. Good marks, good tackle etc
Cheers

Hi Clinker,
Red rock can be quite hit and miss, the ground is quite snaggy so certain parts of it are not suitable for baitfishing especially as you are still new to the game. (IMO)
I would focus on two easy to fish marks not so far from Red Rock to try and catch your first Bass.
The wooden bridge at the Dollymount and the martello tower portmarnock are two venues which are easier to fish than Red rock and in my opinion are more productive.
Drop me a PM for info on weather condtions, bait ect....

Hi Greg.
Yeah I'm a newbie so I'll take any advice I can get, thanks a lot. The main obstacle I've faced as a novice is getting snagged. It used to happen to me lots out fishing off the rocky side of the pier in Dunlaoghaire. Eventually I remedied this by reeling in fast so that the feathers would stay close to the surface. I guess this isn't a technique which can be used with bait fishing?
I've heard people say that you should reel in after 5 or 6 mins of casting. I'm no expert but that to me is asking to be snagged!! I have to start reeling straight away to have any chance!
I might start experimenting this year with rotton bottom rigs. There's a lot to take in with this fishing game!
Thanks again for the help
