Tracht Beach Kinvara Co. Galway

Hi,

Newbie here - first post.

I was wondering has anybody fished Tracht Beach just past Kinvara. It seems clean and looks like its has plenty of shellfish especially razor clams. looks as if it may produce a few flatties.

Was thinking of a bit of evenng fishing there - has anyone with any experience of the area have any success there or near there.

I know the beach your on about.I have never fished it but it looks fairly good for flats.As for bait, Im not sure but went digging for bait there and there was white ragworm and the odd lugworm.Dont take take my advice that seriosly because as I said before I have never fished it.There are a lot of people swimming there in summer aswell.

Thanks for the reply - Yes its very popular in the summer I always tend to think if nobody fishes a mark its because its not worth it but there's no harm in trying especially with parking and access being so easy. I suppose most people head past Tracht, Newquay etc heading for Blackhead.

I'm from Kinvara (although based in Cork now) but have never fished Tracht. I used to collect lug there with my dad years ago. I would doubt whether the fishing is great but like you said you never know till trying it, and there may be a few flats if nothing else.

If you are standing on Tracht and look to your left you will see Newtownlynch pier in the distance (about 10 minutes walk along the cost from Tracht). I think it is a decent place for bait collection on a low spring tide a large expanse of sand is exposed around and to the right of the pier. Razors, cockles and lug are available as far as I know.

The island in front and a bit to the right of you as you stand on Tracht looking out is Island Eddie. I have been over a number of times by boat and have seen ray swimming under the boat as we headed towards its shore (in water that was probably no more than 2 metres deep and between 100 and 200 yards from the shore of the island.

Trácht Beach is a waste of time in my opinion feel free to try it for yourself but my advise is save yourself time and energy and try elsewhere

have fished tracht 3 times and caught one flounder - have heard of plenty of others blanking there also

the bottom is not sand more a thick mud - your weight hits it and then sinks - you think your snagged and eventually it gives way really easily on the retrieve

all those shellfish shells seem to mean nothing - they just get washed up there

parkmore round the side of the penisula doesnt produce much either into kinvara bay

think its all too shallow around there unless your able to get out to 200 yards for those ray above

Sounds like it maye be ok for digging a bit of bait but probably not going to have much luck there.

I'll leave it to the swimmers or maybe do some casting practice there.

Have fished Tracht once or twice before I got more sense...

However have seen mullet in the small bay beside Newtownlynch Pier if anybody has the patience for them.

You might get the odd Mackeral from New Quay but wouldn't bother when Black head is so close.

so Tracht is a waste of time, I am looking for sea bass locally can you help? I live in Kinvara, any sea bass mark around closer than BlackHead?

I'm looking for beaches close enough to galway which are clean and productive - will take anything, as I'm a newbie too.

I've had a beachcaster for over a year and have only taken it out a couple of times (3 doggies), so need to practice casts without risk of loosing gear, and with some chance of a bite.

Think I need a bit of practice with casting for common species before I up my game.
