Hi Jimmy

I'm a Dublin angler but i spent quite a bit of time fishing around rathmullan several years ago. The only fish (in my experience) to be found in the swilly are Thornback ray, the odd dogfish and Tope in season (Mid May onwards for about 6 weeks).
Rathmullan pier offers access to deep water and thornies can be caught here but not in great numbers. The pier is supported by large piles around which the sea flows which rules out fishing for Tope as they're likely to wind themselves around these pillers. In fact there's very few spots to target Tope from the shore. One spot I always fancied trying for Tope was MaCamish point (beside Otway golf club , 3 miles North of Rathmullan). This is a headland running out 100yds into the sea, but it has a Martello tower which is a private residence (holiday home) at the end of it which makes it difficult to access.
Another spot worth trying is Fanad head (12 miles north of Rathmullan), fish from the platform where boats can pull up, back into the bay. You'll be fishing into deep water over sand and anything can turn up.(Red Gurnard, TBack Ray, Conger, Whiting, Flounder, Pollack, Mackeral). Hope this helps.

The elbow on the beach at Rathmullen can fish well for thornies and tope. Waders and a long cast needed. Port salon is another good mark on that side of the lough. Tight lines.
