i'm buying 2 new rods aand reels and i want to try ones that break down in to maybe 4 or 5 sections. 13 footer and 11 footer(bass) fixed spools(one of them maybe a baitrunner but not sure if they are any good from the beach for casting!). mainly for transport reasons to avoid damage and ease of transport on location. do they have a good action?, are they easy to maintain?( do the sections stick?) and are they strong and durable enough. i don't mind spending a bit extra for good quality, but i was wondering around how much. anyway hope anyone can help. cheers

Bigbass,
Here's a thread about a PENN 3 piece beachcaster which you might find of interest:

ya i have that penn, great little rod, i've never had a problem with it and would highly recocommend it. being a three piece it fits perfectly into a boot, and you don't have people whinging about the rod taking up all the room in the car! the voyager was the old model, i dunno what penn have called their new three piece, but i'm sure it's the identical blank with a nice new paint job, and an even more extreme name!!!! it's a very user friendly rod, i'm still only getting to grips with 'proper' sea fishing, but i have managed to impress myself a couple of times by belting the lead a fair distance(well it sounded like it went forever!) i'm not sure if it could take a full pendelum cast, but there's no fear of me trying to master that technique for a while yet! works really well with an off the ground cast though. the only real critism i have with any of the penn rods is the price, they appear to me that they just pick random numbers out of the air, and through them on a price tag, i've heard anything from over 300yoyos to 100yoyos for the voyager, and it definitely doesn't instill me with confidence in the company. personally i paid 200euro for it, and i'm happy enough with it, but keep an eye out for the end of season bargains on all the penn gear. i have never fished with any other three or four piece rods, so sorry for the limited information.

have the 4 piece whisker, superb rod for plugging/spinning for bass, bit expensive but well worth it, fits perfectly under the front seat aswell..

If you're looking for a spinning rod I recommend the Shimano Exage range:

Cheaper deals on this site:

Great for keeping in car and I use with a Shimano Bait Runner.

For a four-piece, I would look no further than the Daiwa Whisker Spin, either in 10ft (10-60gm) or 9ft (7-40g). I broke my 10ft and bought a 9ft, 'cause its a bit lighter.
The Lochmor is higher spec but pricey, and you wouldn't see/feel the difference - the Whisker has a better handle anyway.
The Exage 9ft is 5 piece, and lighter than the equivalent Daiwa, but cheaper.
My biggest piece of advice is: push the bits together firmly and don't thrash during the cast or a section will come undone. If you're unlucky, the pressure will be applied when the joint is about to part and you might end up cracking the end of the female joint. Been there, done that etc.[/url]

thanks lads for all the info. i had a good look around and looked at some of your ideas. that penn rod is now called the penn seatrek surfblaster twin tip. its a 3+1 piece 12footer(each section 52 inches) so it sould fit nicely also it comes with two top sections. one is soft for calmer conditions and the other is a bit stiffer, handy for fishing in a bit of surf. i read a couple of other reviews on it and people seem to really like especially for casting. i also had a look at some of those spinning rods but i'll have to wait awhile to save up a bit of extra cash. maybe i sould start insuring my fishing gear :D anyway thanks again lads and i'll let yous know if its any good.
