Hiya powderkeg I also use a baiting needle but I then put a small sliver of mackerel on the hook as an extra attractant and to help keep the lugworm on the hook Hope this helps.

Ya...i agree with shane, the scent would be gone after a minute..as said earlier use a baiting needle, and use a thin strip of mackeral of squid at the end. Keeps the worm from sliding over the hook point and seems to help attract more fish

Bait needle is the way to go and need to change bait more frequently. Make sure you use a pointed bait needle too as the rounded tipped ones intended for rag only burst the worm and allow it was out in seconds.
About 20 years ago and uncle of mine that I used to fish Greystones with had hooks specifically designed for baiting with Lug. He used to get them mail order back home in Wales, I have searched the internet for years at this stage and can not find anything like them.
They were a double hook with a fine wire something like the kamasan b940, shaped like a double salmon fly hook, but the 2 sides were only brazed at the eye. The wire was quite springy and to bait up, it was a case of squeezing the 2 points together, into the tip of the baiting needle and put the worms on, the worm would never come off.
If anyone knows where to find such hooks, please let me know as I would love to get my hands on some and can not recommend them enough.
No point in trying it with salmon hooks, the wire is too hard and one of the points will break off before you get it into the baiting needle.

another tip i use is to thread a seaquin onto the trace before i tie on the hook especially if using a flapper rig once you have put the worm on the hook push the seaquin down onto the worm it stops the worm being blown up the trace, works for me

Break the tail off the lug and tread the hook through from there rather then from the head end. use a bait stop on your snood to stop the lug traveling up your snood when you cast.

this will only work if you are using a clipped down rig  a clipped up or a flapper has the opposite effect

Thread in on via the head, I tend to use at least two mediunm sized lug and tip it off with a sliver od squid, a small sliver btw, that push it all back down with a bait stop to make one nig fat juicy bait. Certainly wouldn't go making a rake of holes in the bait and 15-20 mins is long enough by far before it needs replacing.
