donegal, st john's point, what to use & fish for

Sun Apr 18, 2010 1:49 pm

hi all,
i am a newbee to the site and pretty new to the whole sea fishing thing.
i am sat at home today and the missus & kids want to go to st johns point in donegal for a spin. last year we did a lot of camping & snorkeling around the same area.

but what i want to know is:
this time of year what would i fish for, would there be pollack yet ?
what sort of rig would i use ?

would i be better off spinning and what lure should i use ?

many thanks for reading,
all and i mean all info would be greatly appreciated.

i am living near bundoran in donegal so also any info on any places to fish would be great

hear the seatrout fishing in bally shannon is out of this world, never fished st johns point but know a few who did, think you can catch a mixture of everthing there ,pollack ,wrasse ,macks, conger, dogs and basking shark are seen there regular in the summer ,friend says hes sure he saw a big blue there as well.if your interested in river angling i hear the bundrowse is getting a good run of spring salmon at the moment.

Hi there,i think it is a bit early for st johns, i find that it usually fishes best from july through to november. As for pollock i find the best bait is rag, the setup i would use for this would be a 1oz inline lead folllowed for a rubber bead then a swivel. I then attach 3ft of 20lb mono then tie on a strong 2/0 hook. Sandeel also works well with this set up, but with the rag you can catch pollock and wrasse, the slower the retrieve the better! Hope this helps....

No probs, as mentioned ballyshannon fishes well for seatrout, although a game license is required. Rossnowlagh beach is pretty good with some thumper flounder to be had, and if your luck is in maybe even a bass. Goodluck
