Clip Down Trace

Thu Apr 01, 2010 3:19 pm

One trace I hate tying is a clip down rig. I'll normally only tie it if I know I'll need it and so would not have any with me if I suddenly needed it. Or I'd have one with bigger or smaller hooks then I need! The two ways I tie them is either by hanging it it up at a height and let the weight dangle and clip the snoods into place or clip the bottom end and do it upside down.

The two problems I often get is that when I go to use it I find that I've made a bags and there is to much pressure on the snoods rather then the rig body or that the snoods are then to lose. I always stretch out the rig body first before adding the snoods which I'd then stretch before crimping. I've used normal mono, maxima and amnesia for the snoods but still manage to get it wrong sometimes. However when I use a spring it seems ok but don't always have one when I need it

Does anyone have a different way of tying them or a tip that I'm missing?

SRT Springs - Works for me

if your not match fishing just make a load of pulleys

really quick rigs to make - your hook is clipped down by the weight of the lead - no need for crimps, srt springs, guided missile impact shields or any of your other fancy shenanigans!!!

the gemini srt spring is the answer mate,if you dont know what it is look up the gemini tackle site they even show traces made up with them.john

I use these.

Easily adjustable if you need to fiddle around with your rigs, change snoods, hooks etc whilst on the beach.

Good idea Mark! Lads I use the STR springs myself but I really like to keep it simple. For matches I would use the springs alright. I was kinda talking about the technique of crimping the snoods so they just fit right on the rig body. Rather then doing it to tight and putting pressure on the snood. I know if I have someone around (like Herself) it's easier as you can put pressure on the rig both ends.

.... and while you're answering that, Mark: the cut ends of the coil crimps don't abrade the mono at all?

Hugo,

Havent had that happen myself, but I do tend to bend out slightly the cut end so its stands away from the rig body running through the coil.

Dont use multi hook clipdowns often though, tend to stick to the easy option with the pulley, as corbyiere pointed out

Nothing simpler Dfella 8) put all your components on you rigbody, tie the snoods (with hooks added) on, clip a lead on, put the hooks into the clips pull tight and crimp. Its not rocket science :D

your all barmy leave your crips so that with pressure you can slide them up or down the rigbody and that way even if you need to change a hook you can slide the snood down a bit lower i,m not a fan of cascade swivel rigs as i find the simpler the rig the less tangles especialy in a rough surf

I usually use two stop knots under the beads. It means I can adjust if snoods stretch or break and I can re-use the rig body a few times.

I put a small bit of stiff sillicone rig tubing above and below the beads that trap my snood swivel and pass the rig mono through the tubing and pull tight , that way you can slide it to the correct length , and if you have to replace the snood on the beach you don't have to be precise with your snood length

i started using the breakaway adjustable crimps a while back
http://www.breakaway-tackle.com/product_info.php?cPath=60&products_id=1031

i find them very handy. if you decide to change hook sizes you can just cut the hook off, tie a new one on and re-adjust the crimps to tighten everything up again.
sakuma also do a version but they come with the rubber already in the crimp. i got these once but found that pushing 50lb line thru pushed the rubber out and they were useless then. plus they were a bit dearer with a lot less in the pack.

I have tried most of the above and still had problems with line stretch after some hairy Bass had to be dragged from the surf,

didn’t happen all the time but when it did it meant I had to swap over rigs or use the rig as a flapper,

I use the Mustad bait clips below for some time but found all too often the bait wouldn’t release on contact with the water so I started to nip a little bit off of the curve and they worked fine,

Very easy to adjust, simple matter of pushing it up or down as needed, now I make my own and I have to say they work better then the ones I modelled them on,

Before I started to cut a little bit of the curve off I found if you leave a little bit of slack on your snood so the hook sits freely in the curve but wont come over the edge of it worked fine also,

I think these will solve your problem, there’s 2 types that I know of, 1 up 1 down,

in the link below they use crimps.. I use stop knots made of tubeing.

As roger siad only tighten your crimps thats u can still move them under pressure. i have had no problems since i started doing this
