The story & where to start!

Fri Mar 19, 2010 2:59 pm

Hi,

I'll start with a bit of background, I currently reside in Kildare and use to do alot of match coarse fishing until the new arrival (now currently 2 years old) which put a Hiatus to my fishing for while, well not really stopped the fishing I just couldn't put the Prep in at night anymore. Well I have an itch now and I am eager to get fishing again and so I decided that I would like to try some shore sea fishing. I am not a complete novice and do know most of my knots and have being boat fishing a couple of times before, but just fishing with feathers for Mackeral/Pollock, I do have some questions though and would appreciate any help.....

1. I need to get some gear, I have a reel that will be suitable just need to get a rod and all the other bits and bobs (tri-pod etc) Can you give me some recomendations and places I can purchase this items. Trying to keep the price with in reason. She'd would go mad if she knew I was buying more fishing gear I already have a shed full :)

2. I was hoping someone would be able to show me the ropes regarding bait and presentation, I wouldn't mind just tagging along and seeing how its done.

3. I currently don't drive as I work in Dublin so I commute by train. We do have a car so I can get around to some areas but she requires the car most of the time so that brings up a small issue. I use to have a friend who I coarse fished with and he had a car so we could get where ever we needed to go. I was wondering if there was anyone local to me who I could share a car with. I have no problem paying petrol costs etc.

I am sure there is more I should be asking but I can't think just now. :D

Cheers
Brendan

Firstly Brendan, welcome to the site.

Its a great resource for sea anglers of all experiences/abilities.

Regarding tackle, there is a for sale/wanted section here

viewforum.php?f=22 that should be of benefit to you and lots will buy tackle through ebay and such aswell. I'd say you would just want to start off with a standard 12 - 13ft beachcaster, but I'd say your better to buy something of decent quality 2nd hand than buy brand new.

What reel do you intend to use?

Veals are great for bulk buying hooks, line, weights etc

http://www.veals.co.uk/

Most anglers will make up their own end rigs in preference to buying ready made ones, it should work out cheaper that way, and you are in control of the quality of the components and how well they are made. Rigs would be a little more complicated to your average course stuff, as common sea rigs would have anywhere between 1 and 3 hooks on a rig. 3 is the accpeted maximum, unless using feathers for mackerel.

Here is a site which shows some of the more popular rigs.

http://www.gemini-tackle.co.uk/rigs.html

Some great videos here for bait presentation.

http://www.gofishing.co.uk/Top-navigation/Sea-Fishing/

There is a section here for meeting up with other anglers

viewforum.php?f=8

You'd be welcome to tag along with me and a few others sometime but I dont know anybody who lives out your way sorry mso you would have to make your own way as far as dublin atleast, the sea fishing is generally poor around dublin/wicklow during february and march, but should start to improve come april with an increase in the water temp.

This is only my 3rd year sea angling so I'm by no means an expert, but some of the lads who use this site are extremely good at the sport and always generous enough to share their knowledge and experience.

A few other parts of this website that will aid your introduction to sea angling listed below incase you hadnt seen them yet.

That lot should keep you going for a while anyway, and any other questions dont be afraid to ask.

Regards

Mark

hi welcome to shore /rock fishing. as i saw the other post you have a good list of sites to look up. as for advice with out knowing what your reel is like its hard to say what rod to get .I like the greys GRX-s 13 FOOT 5 OZ. its got sensitive tip to show bites and a sliding reel set to suit how you cast.I use a fixed spool on this rod and get good casts . i got mine in west port in Huston's tackle for 120 euro case included.its a nice rod that will handle rays dogs huss and show up bites from dabs and small fish too. as for traces a three hook flapper covers most areas. and with three hooks out its given a good sent trail. a pulley pennel rig is good too for bigger baits for rays and dogs. as for bait mackerel is good for most sand eel too is good and lug and rag are good for flats as well as any thing that passes. as for a tripod ive just got the Ian golds bh11 6 foot it was around 60 euro post included and i got it from veals. it might sound deer but a good tripod is vital.Ive bought one last year and it didn't last and that was 80 euro. so take your time when buying rods and gear and on this site every one is really helpfully so before you buy ask whats it like. hope this is some help all the best tight lines.

welcome to the site brendan, you are in the right place as the lads are more than free with the tips and methods for sea fishing, first of all as you were into coarse fishing, then im betting you have a pike rod,and a carp rod, these would be fine to start with, the pike rod for the bigger fish like dogfish, huss, ray, etc.the carp rod for flatties like flounder, dabs, and plaice, and you would have wicked craic landing a pollock with it :D the shakespere "salt" range of rods are very good for the money, between (60-100 euros)remember a lot of sea fishing is at night, depending on tides so the car might be available?the common baits to start with would be frozen/fresh mackerel, frozen sandeel, squid, lug, rag, which will catch most species and can be bought in most fishing tackle shops.so best of luck with the fishing, and if you get the chance to fish with some of the lads on this site then do,and you will pick up a lot of tips in a very short length of time.

Welcome to the site im in kilcock so not to far away next time im going to go out ill give u a shout .As for rods and reels get your self a good fixed spool set up . spend a few pound on one and it wont let you down . there are plent of lads around the site that will help you with any questions you might have and someone might have a good second hand outfit for sale. As for rigs buy a few shop tied ones and learn to tie your own rigs from them . but all you really need are a few 2up 1 down flappers some pullys and clipped down rigs for distance . on the east coast youll mainly be targeting flats dogs bass and hounds in the summer . the baits youll need are lug rag peeler mac and sandeel which can be bought from some good tackle shops in the east coast and from some bait suppliers. The lads on this site are very good and have no probs sharing info about tactics and marks so dont be afraid to ask any questions no matter what they are . I would also recomend joinning a club as that is another great way to get pointers. there are a good few clubs in our area
if you have any questions dont hesitate to pm me
