Newbie need advice

Hi All,

Being recently made redundant and decided on retirement, I've a bit of time on my hands, too many years ago I fished a lot, mostly Pike and Trout very little sea, just mackrell off Bangor old pier thats how long ago it was. I would like to take up fishing again and need help, the array of goodies in the shops is mind numbing for an old git like me..
I would like to fish off the shore any advice on marks in the Bangor area and tackle will be gratefully accepted!

Hi Fireblade

Do not be lured into shinny trinkets etc. Get a good basic rod with a decent back bone- A good Zipplex, Diawa or Anyfish should start you (around £100 give or take a few ££). second is a half descent fixed spool reel- mine is an Okuma. then rigs and weights- 2 and 3 hook flappers are a good bench mark.

With regards to marks- co. down is not where I fish- more the antrim coast. There are quite a few folk from bangor and the down coast on the site so they would be able to advise on marks better than me. Try donaghadee- it seems to be fishing ok at the min. If you venture up the antrim coast give me a shout.

Donaghadee can be good, but if you head a bit further down to Ballyhalbert Pier it can produce some good results. Its also cormfortable fishing. When fishing it can usually get a couple of species during one session.

How they hanging dude, had a little look around and seen some nice rigs on the link below, the only bit of advice i would give you at the moment is learn to make up your own rigs,

easy done with the help of the lads on here, I'm sure most of us have had a problem along the line with bad knots and such from rigs got in tackle shops,
dont get me wrong there are plenty of good rig makers but for every one of the good theres 3 bad and as your new to this game it best to make up your own end tackle,

firstly going on my first efforts at this type of fishing i lost plenty of end tackle because i couldnt tell a rough ground mark from a mouse dropping,

works out much cheaper, also use a "shock leader" if you dont know what this is then just google it,

you may know all this so i will shut up and say i hope you get some help from this link,

right now I'm going back to have a scan over that site because i seen some nice looking rigs there

there are plenty of guys on here who fish around bangor and other areas of co.down,if you visit bangor angling centre or belfast angling centre the guys there [harry senior harry junior mc kee]will keep you right with tackle and rigs and also being sea anglers they will know a lot of marks aswell.ronald surgenor[hope i spelt this right] is a very friendly bloke from that area ,and will offer you some good advice if you pm him.there are a few clubs in that area, and they are a good sourse of help on rigs ,marks and tackle if you whent along to a meet.john

fireblade- I have been told that bangor pier (new) is a good spot especially in summer loads of mack.
