Laytown

After drawing blanks at Howth Pier, Howth Rocks, Portmarnock, Portrane, Donabate & Malahide Estuary... the next on the list is Laytown.

Though I don't live too far from Laytown I'm not too familiar with the place.

I'd really appreciate if someone could recommend a fishing spot in the area. Going there Sunday.

Have you tried for the Mullet in Malahide, Pete?

No haven't tried but I did see 2 guys pulling one in last week just 200yrds swords side of the Rail bridge going into Malahide village.

Me thinks I should hold off on fishing for Mullet for awhile as I'm having enough truble catching the supposedly more easily caught fish.

Fishing once or twice a week for last 3 months have yielded 1 Flounder.
My wife was expecting Seafood Sundays instead she gets a fish supper from the local Takeaway.

There's 9 miles (I think) of beach between Mosney and Bettystown and I've never heard any mention of anyone fishing it. Is it completly devoid of fish or is it a well kept secret?

The beach at laytown is shallow and can only be fished in a good surf. It's pretty pointless to try otherwise. Wait for a good easterly wind to blow before trying it.

In the right conditions it produces good bass, and also some very large flounders. I know from a very reliable source that several decent bass, and some big flounders have been caught there in the past 4 weeks. But as I said, only when the surf is up. Just don't forget that it's the BASS CLOSED SEASON! Besides the fishing there is best in July, August and September.

You could try Julianstown also. You can fish the beach in surf conditions, then retreat up the beach to fish in the Nanny estuary mouth as the tide floods. Bass and flounder are again the targets, and spinning into the estuary mouth in late evening is a good tactic. And if nothing is happening you can fish into the river itself at the footbridge - there are masses of mullet in the pool there!

Bar Howth you seem to be fishing in spots were fish can be scarce, and only appear in the right conditions. You need a tonic I think! Get yourself down to the rocks on the righthandside of Greystones pier, and you'll get plenty of doggies and flounder. Straight mackeral strip will catch loads of fish, also try using rag tipped with mackie. I know how you feel, as I tend to concentrate on bass from late April - late September, and can go weeks without seeing a fish. Sometimes you need to hit spots like this just to remind you what catching a fish is like!
