MOST EXPERTS SAY A COD IS A FISH OVER ABOUT 5LB BUT WITH THE WAY THE COD ARE THESE DAYS REGARDS STOCKS AND SPECIMEN FISH BEING CAUGHT MOST DUBLIN ANGLERS I KNOW REGARD ANY FISH OVER 3LB AS A COD

i was always under the impression that a cod was a anything over 6lb and a codling was under 6lbs

the way thing are going we might be converting them weights to oz's instead of lb's

7lb was what i thought was the weight that a codling became a cod.
therefor ive never caught a cod ,not even a poor one

I wouldn't count them as different species.

5 lb seems to be the limit:

But apparently a cod under 10 lb is regarded as a codling in Norway

Don't know why there is a distinction between cod and codling anyway - they are all cod.
You don't have a distinction between pollock and a pollockling or coalfish and a coalling, both of which can all grow to substantial size if they manage to avoid the nets. Or what about a ling and a lingling.

I read somewhere that codling is the term used for a cod before it reaches sexual maturity, and I also read somewhere that due to over fishing cod are becoming sexually mature at a younger age so 5 lb may even be too big for the codling/cod limit.

How commercial fish buyers distinguish between a codling and a cod is, a cod is the length of a fish box if it's shorter it's a codling

Cod are getting very scarce :(

As Frank put it anything under 10 lb its a Codling just like our scandanavian friends and it is basically a commercial status of size. Why is it all other fish are recorded by anglers on the list of species no matter what the size is ,As an example i,m sure its the same as small bass being called a schoolie or a small Lsd being called a Lesser spotted puppy fish ,Is it really down to exact lenght ,weight etc etc before the young fish mature and can then be called be there proper title ,Whats the term for a small Ling(LingLing)Coyser get the phone :lol:Its just sea-fare slang A cod is a cod and unfortunately counts as one species.

As in humans there are different names called for each stage of there life cycle, baby’s, tots, children, teenagers, adolescents, adults and senior citizens.

The cod is no different, as Frank put it a cod is a cod is a cod

To make things worse the word Tambling was wildly used in the Cork area as another description for a size of cod.

I never heard it called "Tambling" in Cork

It was called a "Tamlin" and smaller than a "Tamlin" was a "Tommy Cod"

Cod of all sizes are also sometimes referred to as "nags" here!
