eeler i sell bait for a living and have been selling bait for the last 30 years .we stop selling rag from1st November to 17 march each year ,this is to allow the rag to breed and anyone digging rag during this time is killing off the stocks ,each green rag killed is 1000 rag lost the next year .This self inflicted ban is why we have rag stocks in Dublin. In parts of the UK the rag stocks are wiped out .Think of the future and use lug or farmed rag .

I wasn't aware of that - presumably rag on the south coast (Cork Harbour) have a similar breeding cycle?

he is talking about ordering them from the uk from seabait or from topsy baits in holland,as far as i know there little bit more expensive but not sure if there is any difference between them and the irish rag i used them in the home internationals before and they arent a bad worm if fresh and ther very lively and tough.mark

in the north there is a shop in coleraine now how brings in dragon bait ragworm (think they are linked with topsy bait), and price wise isnt too bad at all. it has to be ordere on a monday for the following weekend.
have used it at the home nations a couple of times, nice lively good sized bait. but have used it at the last 2 opens and blanked comletely with fish coming in around me!!! hard to know!!

They do Frank...best to leave them alone at this time of the year...it's a pity that some of the others posters from Cork are still using them as bait. The condition of some of the better known rag beds in the harbour has suffered badly as a result over the last few years

Every day is a school day boys. I had no knowledge of the breeding season etc. Will need to switch over to lug for a few months. Bring on March.... .

Just on this note- has anyone brought in/used white rag or madies?

That's an impressive bit of ecological self-regulation Dave - shame the commercial fishing industry can't learn from it. More power to you and your colleagues, you deserve an award.
