Lads I know this is a tad outside the sea fishing dictum but I was just wondering if anybody has been down to have a crack at them this year. Are they in, what was the run like etc?

Blaker,
I had 11 Twaite Shad in St. Mullins last Monday 9 th May on a Blue/Silver Tasmanian Devil. Fished from 5 am to 3 pm!
3 Specimens of 2.50 lbs., 2.54 lbs. and the best at 2.68 lbs.
The Shad came in on the morning tide and could be seen chasing each other around the river, a sight I have not seen for years!
I missed many fish.
Best fishing was very early morning.
I returned a few days later with the following results!
11 th. May 5.00 am to 3 pm.
5 Twaite Shad including a specimen of 1.24 Kgs. on a Blue and Silver Tasmanian Devil.
Missed about 6 fish.
11 th. May 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm.
4 Twaite Shad including a specimen of 2.62 lbs. on a Blue and Silver Tasmanian Devil at about 8.30 pm.
A “late” shad for a change!
12 th. May 6.00 am to 11.00 am.
3 Twaite Shad.
My brothers Mike, Fintan, Mark and Pat had about 2 Shad each.
12 th. May 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm.
The Five Ryan Brothers Blanked!
Dick Looney, Cork, in position for an early morning Twaite Shad.

Blaker,
Go for it! Should still be there!
Search from opposite Old Mill right up to Island. Get permit from Blanchfield's Pub to fish at Island.
Tight Lines!

Nipped 2 but it was far from an intensive session so they may well get on better than I did. Just glad to cross them off the species list for the year. Do you know the number for Blanchfields down there. I spent half the day trying different county combinations with directory enquiries on;y to be told the place doesnt exist! WI was 20 miles back out the road before I remembered I was going to stick the head in the door!

Sorry Blaker don't have tel. no. and had no luck with Eircom search for Tel. no. for Nicky Blanchfield. He does exist! Had a few pints there last week! He opens at the most peculiar times! It's opposite the big Mound (Norman Motte) in the village of St. Mullins.
I will ask my mates to get the Phone number when they are down on Thursday.
Well done with the Shad!

I take it these were caght down south? Do they frequent the Dublin area at all, or more to the point, where would be a decent place to have a crack at them.
Cheers

River Barrow, at St. Mullins, Co. Carlow is the best place.
From Dublin go to Carlow, Leighlinbridge, Bagenalstown, Borris, Glynn, St. Mullins. Less than 2 hrs. by car from Dublin.
May is the month when they come in from the sea to spawn. They have also been taken in previous years at the brigde at Carrick-on-suir.
Not in Dublin area to my knowledge.
They are presently in the Barrow at St. Mullins.
6/8 lbs. b/s line, light spin rod, small spin reel, Blue/Silver Tasmanian Devil best.
Good luck!
:D
