Hi Guys, was driving back from Kerry last night and stopped off in Landers just outside Tralee to spend a few quid on some bits and pieces. they had fireline reduced to €25 for 300yds. I was just wondering if i was to use this, what shockleader (type eg? mono??) would i need to get? as if you use a mono shockleader surely this takes away from the sensitivity of the fireline mainline? oh and is it braid? ive never used braid before, but decided to give it a go - what knots do i use on fireline?? I will be using it on an aerlex 8000 on a 13ft beachcaster. God so many questions!!
Thnks,
BTW - some great deals in said place

You will absolutely have to use a shock leader with the fireline, 30' of 50-60lb mono will be perfect.
It wont make any difference to the sensitivity of the braid, think about it, if you have cast say 150yd with bait, and there is a bow in the line you prob have 180yds out in the tide, so your mono leader is only about 6% of the total line out and there is a lot less stretch in 60lb mono than there is in 15lb mono.
for knots with the braid I always use a grinner, for the leader you can use an overhand knot in the mono, and a 6 turn grinner in the braid.
tighten the knot in the braid almost fully, pulling it up to 2-3 mm from the overhand knot, then using a pliers, pull the overhand knot very very tight, and carefully pull the braid through it, snugging the braid knot up to it, then holding the braid, pull on the tag end of the braid knot as hard as you can, this causes the braid to almost dig into the mono, 1 drop of superglue on the braid knot can give you more confidence but is not needed, cut off the tag ends as close as possible and there you go.
If you ever snag up with the braid take a few turns of the braid around your arm (over your jumper and fishing jacket so it wont cut you) and walk back slowly till you break out, if you start jerking the braid, or wrap it around a piece of wood it's likely to break where you are holding it.
by the way 20lb fireline breaks at about 40lbs pressure so it can be a bitch to break out.
