Winter angling around Belfast?

Wed Sep 23, 2009 8:38 am

Hi guys,

with the evenings drawing in and autumn getting into full swing I am contemplating my first winter of sea angling - having been much a "fair weather angler" in the past, I'm not sure what to expect.. Between falling water temperatures, darkness, and different fish species.

Can anyone give me a run down on what some marks within reach of Belfast that provide goodfishing through the darker months? Normally I fish during the summer in Donegal but I work in Belfast and rarely go home in the winter.

Also, what baits and species am I likely to encounter? Is there much chance of my first cod?

Cheers,

Rob

alright fella. I usually fish the Antrim coast during the winter months. From Browns Bay Beach, Glenarm, Carnlough, Waterfoot, Cushendall, Cushendun.
I find that the fishing really kicks off in the next couple of weeks because of the fading light getting earlier.
My best advice is to join a club, you will gain experience and fish with others. I joined Glengormely Angling Club and I have learnt a bucket load since about venues and tactics.
Good Luck
Stevie

Scrob. The promenade at whitehead is always worth a throw. Just outside Carrickfergus. Failing this you could always try Bangor Harbour. But as Stevie said the Antrim coast is a good place to be from mid October onwards. Could be just a case of trial and error, just go for a drive and stop at a place that looks like it could hold fish like waterfoot pier.

Failing this you could always try Norway for your 1st Cod

I was in Norway last year, don't worry I barely need a second excuse to go back! Though didn't manage any fishing last time

I might actually take up the idea of joining a club, to keep me busy through the winter days. Would you have contact details handy there for Glengormly? What kind of stuff does the club do and how often would I be expected to wet a line? I am a trainee accountant and work Mon-Fri and am in class all day Saturdays so time is not always on my side but I would jump at the chance to go fishing in the evenings under the cover of darkness! Do the club head out now and again as a group and are there competitions etc?
