Rigging Xlayer - How?

Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:36 am

I started using Xlayers over past few weeks in bass hunt, and I'm going to try them more for pollack also in the coming week. Up till now I have rigged them based on the following guide I found:
http://www.henry-gilbey.com/photo_essays/rigging_the_megabass_xlayer.html

However, I noticed on the actual Xlayer pack it shows the hook coming out the other (flattish) side of the jelly eel. Does anyone have any views on whether this makes any different, and if so which is preferred?

Also, if spinning with braid, what is the best way to connect the braid to the jighead? Can this be done via a small swivel clip, or should the braid be tied directly to the jighead (if so any tips on what kind of knot to use).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Morning scombroid.

Ive tried and caught Bass on both methods you have mentioned.
If I think the fish are feeding in the upper layers of the water I rig them 'light side with the ribs' up and I rig them 'light side with the ribs' down if I feel the fish are holding on the bottom.
This way it gives the fish more of a chance to see and attack it.

Defenitly use a STRONG swivel clip tied to your braid, then clip on your jig head to this.

Ive seen countless swivel clips smashed open by Bass in the last few months. So get a quality set.

Good Luck.
Danny.

Thanks Danny

So for 'light side with the ribs' up does this correspond to having the hook protruding through the flat side of the Xlayer (and vide versa for the other way around)?

Thanks for tip on swivel-clip, I started using swivel clips last week but haven't had a single bite on the Xlayers since - I was afraid that the swivel-clip I am using might be destroying the action of the lure (it is a smallish Mustad angular type clip where the clipping part lies inside the loop rather than protruding outwards). Point taken on using strong swivels, may have to try different types.

OT I'm finding the braid great for feeling all the bumps along the bottom but have yet to catch a bass on it :( I did manage to strangely catch a flounder spinning with it though!

The light side will be facing the hook point when fishing light side up and vise versa.

Also different shaped jig heads impart different actions on the xlayer whem twitched.
Experiment with them find which ones suit your style of fishing.
