Where are the fish ?

Sun Aug 02, 2009 8:31 pm

Hi

There is a small port I go fishing to regularly. About a month back I had a great early evening with 34 Mack. About a fortnight later I got another 15. Since then I have got zero.

Earlier this evening I went out and tried several jellies as well as my Mack' rigs. After 2 1/2 hrs of non stop casting and retrieving I gave up. My arms hurt :P

I am a relative beginner to the sea. What would you do now to catch fish, what's happened, would you have given up or adopted another method, if so what, what can I do guys, where have the fish gone, what am I doing wrong ?

Hi Flynnboy, where were you? I've had a similar experience over the last three weeks, f all fish, no macs or anything from the shore. Just a few fish from the boat. Yesterday evening from a local south Dublin Rock Mark the macs at least were back. Graet craic! It's a lot to do with the weather. Unsettled windy weather sends sprats and other small fish back out to sea, the macks follow and lots of bigger fish chase the macs. Once the weather settles again it picks up.
Cheers,

Stephen

I'm on Donegal bay. What was a little crazy about tonight is that I was quite inspired when I got there because within a very short space of time, just as I was tackling up, a big fish turned just metres away. In addition to that the place was teeming with sprats feeding vigorously wherever you looked and I thought, great the Macs will be here soon........ like hell

I just thought "I should have come bottom fishing"..... it has been a very frustrating few weeks with absolutely nothing doing on the lure front :(

Same over here in north Mayo, Flynnboy, just the odd day the fish come within reach, and the margins are all discoloured with bog runoff and choked with weed. Charter boats are getting reasonable catches further out, but we havent been out for a month in our 17footer, too unpredictable for small boats. Just have to wait and pray... :(
