Strandhill area Co Sligo

Hi All

Born again fisherman after some years in the wilderness!

had 1 trip out so far off boat from Westport, and had a good morning fishing but didnt bother in the afternoon as it was dogfish sandbank.

Want I'd like to know is on driving to Strandhill from Sligo as you rise up the hill about a mile before Strandhill there is an estuary/sandbank and wondered if it is worth dangle for flatties and the like.

Dont know many marks and in due course would join a local club but all pointers in Sligo North Mayo coast appreciated

Wozza

hi wozza

never had much success round strandhill myself - tho it looks the part.

other side of the estuary - portavad can be good - seatout - mullet an flats - but often frustrated by hoards of crab, advise I had from a local was to fish a single sandeel on a 1 or 2 ounze weight and keep it moving - best from 1/2 way up to full apparently.

heading towards donegal you have streedagh - beach good for flatties, and off the rocks good for pollack, macks and wrasse

other side here is some stuff from a previous post -

>>>Trawee can throw up a few surprises - head to dramore west on the coast road - it is before augris pier,(if coming from the easky side.) no sign post but on the left there is a turn off one house on the lane left hand side. wee car park with rocks on the right and a small stream , and a good beach on the left, this can be good for seatrout, and seems to throw up a good few turbot but only small, ussually close in. have had ray , flounder, weevers!!!, and my only Bass off here. plauged by surfers but a nice spot.

dunmoran strand can throw whiting and flats , doggies, the odd trout- find it best at night from low up to about 2-3 hrs before high tide

just after dunmoran on the left headin to sligo there is a lane leading past a big house with walled garden - there are high rocks in front of the carpark - good spot for wrasse in the crevasses, with plenty of pollack on float if they are in yet - sandeels worked best for us

estury of the ballissadare river has seatrout, flats, mullet and millions of bait stealing crabs

other side enniscrone pier is very hit and miss, with more misses than hits :-00 - permanently plagued by crabs, a lot of strap conger over the wall, but need rotten bottoms, pollack rockling and doggies and conger are the usual suspects

>

hope some of this helps - an welcome to the site - good to see I'm not the only lunatic in landlocked roscommon interested in sea fisihin :D :D :D

Hi Wozza
Myself and Yorkshireman have fished Sligo hard for about 5 years now and to be honest your wasting your time around Strandhill , we flogged it to death for ages with very little reward, although there is a few good spots to collect bait. Davy has really covered all the best places but I have a few more if ya want to send me a PM, I have a few very good spots around Mayo and Donegal if your on for a drive. Glad to see that there is a few more lads fishing up this way now we might not be the only lunatics on the beach for a change.

Cheers
Shane

Hi Lads

Many thanks for your responses v much appreciated.

I have driven up the hill to Strand hill many times and looked down at that lagoon/estuary/sandbank and thought it looked worthy of a trek down but you certainly have made me look twice.

Fisherking

Dont know if I can be bothered to fight the surfies for the front of the strand but Bass & Dabs is a diff story, and not had a sea trout ( Do I need license for sea trout or that intentional Sea trout fishing only ?)

Davyp

Thanks for that info will print off and try to hit em all at some stage.

Thought that there looked a few good places today on way to Rossy for digging when tide was low never had a shovel unfortunately. Sent you Pm

Had rod in car and took grandson a walk round Yatchs after we'd had a few hours round the rockpools and blow me there must have been 50 Grey Mullet round em estimate some of them at 4 lb mrk but refraction thru water may have exagerated size. but anyways had an half hour at em floating bread but not a sniff must ahve been the scent of Mayo on sarnies from egg ( thats what Im blaming).

Hope to see you on a beach in Northwest soon and thanks again.

hi wazza i fished stradhill during low tide to incoming tide, expect sea trout, turbot and plaice.if you have rag worms that will do but using sandeel is deadly.running ledger with 4oz lead(not grip lead) so far my choice,i used one rod and sandspike so that i can retreat/move back as the tide coming fast.fish there as light as possible, hope this help.

Hi Wozza you have to have a licence for Sea Trout . There's a good spot I've often fished called Mermaids Cove in Mullaghmore. There's a small carpark beside the caravan park just walk back towards the strand & there's a rock mark good for fishing often caught small Turbot, some good Plaice to 1lb & a good few Dabs. Over the strand there's a small stream where we got some realy good Flounder & a friend of mine got some nice Sea Trout there. I've some realy good rock marks between Raughley & Mullaghmore for Big Wrasse, Pollack, & Dogfish if your interested?
