At what stage after low water should the tide start coming back in say in an estuary i know this is kind of vague but any general ideas would be appriciated, im thinking 4 hours or so before high tide ??

Based on my observation. After the full low tide, the tide automatically slowly starts to swing on the reverse direction going high and starts to flood. The same way that it goes to low after full high. This observation is fully on the estuary. I hate some marks on estuaries when it swings after full high cause all the current pulls my line outwards even if I have grip leads... :D

Each area differs
Read the back of the tide book for Cork it will give you a good idea of the tide flow in the harbour.
