Kerry/Clare Mackerel

Hi,

where in Kerry/Clare can Mackerel be caught without a vertical haul up a cliff - in other words bringing in a 6 hook trace over level ground like a beach/flat rocks...

I got plenty of mackeral the week before last fishing in a small boat approx 200m from the Pier at Brandon Village. Talking to a few lads there, there are plenty to be had from the pier itself and the rocks beside the pier.

I've seen a few taken at Fient Pier too but nothing steady. I got a handfull fishing kerry head one evening last month. Was only fishing for about 30minutes. Kerry Head is still pretty high and you need to be careful but i don't think its as bad as Dunlicky in Clare. dunno what the others think?

Coming from Black Head into Ballyvaughan there are rocks to your left that you will get mack off, parking is a b'%^h though

was there on Monday from 15.00 to 24.00, cought nothing apart from tiddlers like pouting, poorcod and sprats, there were a few mackie bashers trying all afternoon from the rocks with no result, t'was a lovely evening though, went up to Monks later then for a pint, probably inspired by all the litter and cans there on the rocks.

The Mackerel are down in Black head and the flats too but the only thing is for some strange reason they are out v far you need to cast at least 100 yds to get them

With the right gear you'll easily bang 3 feathers and a 4oz lead (with shockleader) well over 100 yards. Forget about 6 feathers...don't be greedy. Good fun when there's plenty of bashers around and the fish are well out...when you've caught your few mackeral for bait or brekkie it's nice to watch the reactions when you start to release them back !!! Yes I am a sadist !!!

Nice one Ivan... Takes me back a few years ago when I was getting them in Courtmacsherry at the end of the forrest path. There was the very odd mack coming within normal distance. I was there for bass and was having no luck, but had a couple of mack feathers with me. I was getting full houses at about 120 yards. I was emptying my 4000 size reel and getting a full house on the drop for about an hour. The lads beside me were glaring at me when I started to shake them off.... Good craic all the same.

I saw a lad penduluming for them there one day. Try not to go there if there have been strong winds particularly Easterlys and best results are an hour each side of high tide. On a calm warm day they will be under your feet. In strong winds they can often be found in the deeper water at the lighthouse. There have been no hard and fast rules this year and they could turn up in any tide state or wind conditions but I have had the best results at the times I stated. Black feathers or cheap silver flashers have done well. I have done the best with small 'baitcatcher' type feathers but these tend to be tied on thinner line and seem only to tolerate a three ounce lead and a reasonable gentle cast, they tend to crack off if you hammer them.
