Should we have a new magazine????

i'd love to see one, but i don't think the market is big enough to support one

The market is most definitely not big enough to support a standalone sea angling magazine in this country. The cover price and amount of advertising required would be astronomical. Another thing, it would be very hard to keep a totally dedicated sea angling magazine fresh and topical from what is a small enough pool of writers etc. I'm no expert but when you take your cover price and ad revenue, start deducting VAT, Office expenses, wages, printing costs, distribution costs, the retailers cut, the large amount of unsold copies etc etc it doesnt leave a whole lot to be playing around with.

Anything from 18-25% depending on who you deal with... :D All unsolds returned for full credit.

what about a quarterly newsleter kind of publication?? wouldnt cost the earth to set up and no newsagents fees. just a 3/4 page section for each of the 4 provinces, each quarter written by members here. a lot of the cost would be gotten back with another 3/4 pages of adverts from KNOWN local shops. E10/£10 per year would probably cover the costs.

i would love to see one, with three thousand members on this site alone, you would think there would be demand. But i admit i know nothing about the costs involved, and if its not a professional publication then its not worth doing.

i find magazines have the same stuff in them year after year, and bloated with ad's and prefer using a site like this to get information on new gear and tactics etc..

Unfortunately there simply isn't enough off us, even when you combine the boat anglers with the shore. We simply don't have the population compared to the UK to support such a professional magazine.Thats not to say you can't look to have the existing mags take more of an interest in sea angling, if you've been thinking about writing a piece for a couple of years then get on the keyboard and throw together approx 1600 words, combine that with some decent pictures and you'll find that the editors will if its a half decent piece give you some magazine space.

I've been working for the largest publishers in Ireland for the last 5 years and have often thought about setting one up. As has been said the costs are prohibitive but there is I think, scope for a digital version that could be emailed to subscribers. I think you could keep the cost of subscription low at around €20 per year for 12 issues and get some reasonable money for advertising. As I am presently unemployed what do people think of this idea? I could probs get it off the ground easily enough.

Should we have a new magazine?,,,,If you ask me,,,and you have,,,i'd have to answer with another question,,,Whats wrong with this site?, i've learned more from here than i'd ever learn from any magazine. And i've put it into practice by meeting up with members of the site who've passed on their knowledge of bait presentation, tactics and marks. The reviews of tackle and fishing accessories here are spot on, you can get a decent opinion (and a few indecent ones) on almost everything to do with sea fishing. I've bought all the magazines and find that if you have a years supply of issues, a lot of the same stuff is basically repeated the next year.

I absolutely agree Eyes. I would think that using the talent and knowledge of people on this site would be great. As has been mentioned in another topic on Irish Angler there is a pool of young intelligent enthusiastic sea anglers on here. When I was talking about the digital version I was thinking of producing it on a not for profit basis, more for the love of the fishing. It would be a great excuse!

Having been involved in a digital magazine for the past year, online not email, there's alot of work involved in setting up and running it but I think that internet based stuff is the way to go.

would like to see separate ones for coarse, game and sea angling, as well as the normal irish angler, etc.

I have often thought Irish Angler would be great in a digital subscription format, but just wonder if there would be problems with it being passed around, maybe there is a way to make it work? I borrow a pals mag when he has read it, maybe the same with a digital version, ok some may pass it on, but they might sell a lot more digital copies rather than the mag, just think how easy it would be to find that article on a certain rod or something, takes hours going through all the mags and getting sidetracked :)

Great site you have there, some really good info, didn't realise you had a forum as well.

ever since i was about 14 i used to buy the fishing magazines all types except for coarse fishing, have not bought 1 since i came across this site as i have all the info i need at the touch of a button, why pay money for a bunch of adds and sketchy info with no date reference, everything any angler needs whether or not your a competition angler or leisure angler is all in the archives and current topics on here

With the online magazine running already that is mentioned above, why do anglers who wish to do articles put them together and pass them on to the admins over there and contribute to something which is already running and is damn good for all sea anglers? Would be good to have Irish articles on there...

Simply wouldnt be enough interest to do a solely irish sea angling mag, even the quarterly ifsa newsletter seems to have found an early grave...

Like this, here's one that was done by the leinster fed back in 97 it had great gen on all comps and had results and pics i think it came out quarterly. It seemed to fade out after a couple of years.
