I know you can eat them. Someone told me Tesco sells them as Rock Salmon. So it should be edible.
I haven't tried it though.

Are dogfish like other sharks, in that they have no bones?

I was told that 'Rock Salmon' was in fact another name for 'Mullet' ? I can't see a Dogfish being sold as that on account of its skin being like old leather boots
I have decided not to eat it but use it as bait and if I catch them again its going back into the drink - its too ugly to eat

So I believe, just one cartilaginous spine.

As far as I know Dogfish are skinned if they are going to be eaten for precisely that reason but Rock Salmon are indeed Dogfish, I've never tried eating them though.

I thought I just posted this but its not there - excuse me if it comers through twice....
Yes I just checked on google and the spiny dogfish IS rock salmon. BUT what I have caught does not look like the pictures I have just seen on google - so what have I got
It is about 18" long looks 'sharky' but the head is blunter and it is VERY dark so dark it is hard to make out the mottling in its colouring. The pictures of the dogfish I have seen are quite grey. It has large round black eyes - not like the eyes of the dogfish I have just seen which are more oval shaped. It was very sluggish to catch and put up hardly any fight. Another guy on the pier caught 2 of them. Its skin is very leathery and dry to the feel i.e. not slimy.
What the XXXX is it

SPURDOG fish is the dog that used to be commonly seen on fishmongers slabs and sold as ROCK SALMON.
hopefully they wont be seen that often as there stocks are in a serious decline. as far as i know they are protected from commersial fishing at the moment, wont be long before the common LSD is in a serious decline from over fishing aswell, the whelk boats use them for bait along with huss tope and hounds and brown crabs, i have seen them all landed at local piers but have never seen a spur in a box with them.

this is a dogfish, they come in a lot of different shades, from light tan with distinct mottled spots,to almost black,it depends where you catch them and what the live on,sandy areas or rocky areas tho the round eyes sound wrong,
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Well looking at that pic I'd say yes it is a dogfish. The only thing is it doesn't have those distinctive spots.
Caught in NW Donegal.
