got this
monster last night on a size 2 hook to razor. im thinkin a scorpian fish but lookin to make sure as thats really only a guess. it was only 3 or 4 inches long. either way its a new species for me this year

how big do they grow?? i had a fish that looked like it last year in cobh but it was about a foot long. the guy with me was telling me it was a weaver so i was brickin it tryin to get the hook out. it was only when i came home and searched for pics i realised it wasnt one.

That's a good size for a scorpion fish - most of the ones I have caught would be half that size.
Interestingly if you hold them in the palm of your hand they make a growling noise

i had enough growling last night from the 2 dogs that came up behind me and frightened the life out of me. all i saw was the 2 sets of eyes running towards me in the glare of the headlamp. they were friendly enough tho once i turned it off.

There's tweo common species of sea scorp. The short spined is the bigger of the two and can reach 60cm, the long spined is smaller with a max around 18cm.

looking at the pic it looks like a long spines sea scorpion...
as 'thebigman' there are two native species to our coast line..

Counting the spines on the dorsal fin will help to ID

Its the Colins Gem Guides - Fresh and Saltwater Fish. Out of print and the only place to buy it is on ebay.
