Why does no-one fish here ?

There is a bay local to me here in Donegal Bay (Inver bay) and I never see anyone fish there. The bay has a very shallow sloping sandy bottom and at one end of the bay there are rocks and lots of bladder wrack, at the other end is the estuary of the Eanywater (salmon river).

Why do I never see anyone fishing down there ? Do they know something I don't ? I have certainly seen fish moving in there at the rocky end and I've seen them moving in the estuary. Certainly there are at least salmon in the estuary end.

Is it possible that there aren't any fish over the sandy bottomed stretch ? If you look at the CRFB map for sea fishing in SW Donegal it mentions all of the marks either side of the bay but Inver bay itself is not mentioned. I just can't understand why there would be no fish in there worth mentioning - it is Donegal by after all.

Just curious, any ideas ?

i agree,the only way you will find out what it is like is to try it,i tried a spot that was not on the cfb map and it produces more ray for me then the marks that are on the cfb map

explore new ground,walk the coast line for a bit and some spots will fish so well they will surprise you

They could be mullet or bass maybe, there should definately be flatties around the area aswell.

I had thought of that. I am in fact new to the area which accounts for my ignorance of the score with the bay. I know this is really stupid but as well as being new the area I am new to sea angling and a little self conscious that as soon as I start fishing some local wag will come up and say "ohhhhhh yer wasting yer tyme there lad !

im new to fishing myself. i only picked up a rod this time last year for the first time in about 15years. it was mainly mackie bashing to begin with and started fishing beaches with bait around september. i had plenty plenty of blanks to begin with and eventually started to find a few spots that would produce fish. best thing to do with the place your on about is to fish it a few times at different stages of the tide using different baits. it might be a useless spot but you might also end up with a nice place to fish. if its got an estuary then crab might be the way to go. rag might also be worth using but try everything.
one other tip is not to use huge hooks. when i started out i was using 2/0's but got told to change to 2's or 4's and it really did make a difference.
as for someone telling you your wasting your time, they might be right but youll never know unless you give it a go.

Flynnboy if you wait for a good strong south westerly you'll get flounders on the surf at the beach there, needs a bit of wind to get them feeding properly. Small strips of mackerel ledgered in the tables. Wrasse, sea trout, mullet further out along the edges. County Donegal is a big place and just because you don't see somebody fishing doesnt mean there aren't fish there

dont worry what others think about how you fish or where you fish or the methods you use just go out and enjoy yourself and try different methods and bait and after a few sessions you will find out what works best and where fishes good

I beleive that area dries out at low water but should still produce fish on a rising tide. I have thought about trying that area several times but i need good access as my fishing vechicle is 7mt long and weighs 3ton. Get down there and give it a go, good luck and tight lines.

I know the area you are talking about and I have often wondered that myself.

But as with the Gweebarra estuary, local knowledge tells me that there are no fish. It can be very shallow in places and it all but empties on a low tide.

Generally when local knowledge say's there are no fish, stubborness has pushed me to prove them wrong. But I have failed on a few occassions
But i'm sure the 'locals' have never used rag or large pieces of mackeral!!

I have fished this area once. Theres a beach to the right of the Gwebarra Estuary as shown on the first map below. Found it by chance one day and had a great wee session. Don't know the name of the beach but its beside Dooey Point which is No 11 on the second map below. I had one sea trout and a fair few flounder. Have been dying to get down a run to it but my car is off the road at the minute so hopefully get a run down when the car is sorted. Its a great area down there and theres alot of beaches that probably haven't even been fished. Its so far out of the way that the locals probablt don't even know that you can fish off the beach.

Hi Guys

Can I ask your advice about tactics? I've been a game angler for a number of years but I'm new to the salt.

There is a rocky area to the east of the bay and that ends quite suddenly and gives way to a large sandy gently shelving beach. Assuming it is flat calm - as it has tended to be recently - what method would you use and what sort of fish would you be looking for ? Would the fish tend to be more over the rocks than the sand ?
