There was a post about this earlier, I think the answer was "you get them down the side of harbour walls get some old fish and put it in a drop net lower it down the wall for a few mins and pull it up as fast as you can."
Never tried it, but some say it works for them.
Good luck,
Ian

What has also been said is that when you do get live bait, keep it in a black bucket rather than a white bucket as the bait gets less stressed. If you are going to try and keep it for a day or two, take some fresh sea water and change it every day.

Hi Ian.
You hit the nail right on the head there mate. That is exactly how to collect prawns/shrimps for use as livebait/deadbait. I have done this loads of times, and it usually only takes one or two drops to get enough bait for a good days fishing. I have tried it on both piers at Dun Loaghiare, and it works a treat.
I would like to add one thing though, if possible, tie the chunk of fish to the drop net, as I have found that when hard on the bottom, crabs will try to scurry off with the fish, and leave you with no bait.
Oh yeah, you might also pick up some sizable edible crab for the table at the same time! :D
Cheers

Re: catching the bigger ( North Atlantic ? ) type which are normally further offshore , I understand that the SW of england gets an influx around about now - can find them in rockpools at extreme low water on the spring tide . Does the same happen over here ?
Cheers
Nick
