n00b needs help

hello, im going to be honest im new to this angling game, ive done a fair bit of trout fishing so i know good fish etiquette and have a passion for the sport.

Im hoping to take a friend out fishing this saturday and we were looking a pier to fish off, ive been recommended Bangor as its close to where i live but i have also been told it will be very busy. I have also been told that Donaghadee is a good spot to fish too ! Where do u think would be best for me to go ?

Also im going to need to go and buy sea tackle so what species am i likely to run into off these piers and what rigs and bait should i use.

I should probbly change my line as i currently have a 4lb mono line on that i use for trout, what would be sufficient please ?

I know im asking the world here but i was advised to try this website as i was told you were a great bunch of lads

try this link mate, it should give you a start, if you want more help just ask. and 4lb line would be too light, mainly because it would part quickly if it rubs against rocks or weed

Welcome.. try Robin down in trap and tackle at bangor pier for any bits n bobs you need. He is also good for advice on local spots. then try the pier there and if too many are on it, move down the coast to the Dee.

cheers lads, so the plan is to bring two rods one on the float with worms for pollack etc, 10lb line (am i rite??), and bring a lighter rod to do a bit of spinning with feathers and a few spinnerrs and hoping for mackerel

tbh i will be happy if the sun holds out

Welcome to the site Chris, if your wanting to try bangor pier the best place for starters would be of the fishing platform, close in you'll get wrasse,pouting,pollack and coalies on float fished worm baits( you can get the float kits in trap and tackle ,get some float stops as well) and whatever you do don't be tempted to feed the seal or he'll hang around all day
you'll also get mackeral inside the harbour entrance on feathers.
If your tempted to try the back of the pier be very careful of the hss wake, you'll know its close when the water starts sucking back out through/over the rocks, if this happens get to high ground quick

went to bangor pier on saturday, startted on the grills with no luck, then moved up to the fishign platform, met another 2 lads fronm belfast and the 4 of us fished there from 1- 6pm, i was the only one caught anything check out this bad boy on float with mackerel bait http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac29 ... C01723.jpg i think its a small pollock am i right ? spoke to all the anglers only mine and onother 2 mackerel caught all day, thinking about going on a boat next time any recommendations or other shore marks might be more productive, cheers for all the help people

yep. its a pollack alright. good craic with them on a light spinning rod.
